Now bery "luan", 24-70mm L F2.8:
Buy locally, MS selling $2150,
Buy locally, grey set $1710
Buy JB, about $2009
So where to buy?
In this case, JB is out. Either you are the kiasi type die die must have warranty, then go for MS $2150, since only a little more than JB, the time, effort, and hassle getting from JB is not worth it. Or you are the adventurous type who has confidence nothing will happen to the lens within warranty period, then take the $400 saving and buy the grey set. Besides, the $400 becomes your repair fund. Anything happens, bring to CSC and they will repair at charge, will it be serious enough to exceed $400? I highly doubt it. What are the chances you will need even $1 of service? Very low. Don't get sucked into the fear mongering by some salespeople about the absolute horror of being without warranty. Think about these facts regarding warranty:
1. Manufacturers make products to at least last long enough that you won't need service during warranty period (makes business sense for them).
2. Any savings for buying grey set becomes a repair fund you can tap for repair should you need it, all the time earning interest in bank.
3. With the very good chance you won't need to tap the fund, you end up the winner and can spend the money elsewhere.
4. After warranty period ends, all lens (or body) are on equal footings again, neither has 'advantage' over the other anymore.
5. Grey and local sets are made in the same factory by the same people, to the same spec, and went through the same QC. Grey sets are not rejects or fakes!
6. CSC will service both grey and local sets, at the same price (assume both out of warranty). They will not say: this is grey set, we won't touch it!
7. We need to distinguish grey from imitation, QC rejects, or refurbished. Physically, grey sets are identical to local sets, no better and no worse.
8. There is no fake lenses or bodies as far as I know, these products are just too complex for crooks to imitate. They don't have the know-how or equipment to do it. That's why they go after easier, low-tech stuff, like CDs, DVDs, and handbags.
