Canon Lenses NO MORE International Warranty?

but if they gradually phase out international wareanty worldwide, well, thats a diff story. They wont lose tourists anymore like that. However, they just might lose people to nikon:bsmilie:

I called Canon Hong Kong this afternoon and they said no change to their International Warranty policy for the lenses and flashes. Not sure if Canon is implementing this in phases worldwide but at least officially, Canon HK is still providing International Warranty as of now.
waow....

Thanks for the info CS TAN

so now I have 2 option if want to buy lens, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
HKG : a bit cheaper and I can get int'l warranty
JKT/Indonesia : although its local Indonesia warranty (based on a friend who just got back from there bought EF 70-200 f2.8 from authorized dealer) and I found it cheaper compared to here.

Wow. Anyone sent their lenses bought from HK to SG habourfront CSC for calibration? did they charge? What's the risk of buying lenses overseas especially HK. as I be heading to HK end of this year

I have sent 2 of my lenses bought when I lived in HKG to Canon at Keppel Bay Tower for services, not calibration. Sure they charge but the fee is no different with local set.
My lenses not grey set one they all from authorized dealer in HK (you can refer to CS TAN guide) so no risk at all as they all carry int'l warranty when I bought them.

Just saw this on Canon site

For tourists from other countries
If you buy one of the following products, you can get a special 6-month warranty for tourists that is valid in a limited number of countries:

* PowerShot and IXUS digital cameras
* All digital camcorders (except HD camcorders and camcorders from the professional range)

It is as good as buying from HKG for tourist (i don't know why they will buy from Singapore if they in their sound mind :dunno:).

Now... lets conduct regular MO at non-profits section for getting lenses and flash from Hong Kong. :D

Mostly will boycott local SG canon products and go for overseas ones with international warranty. :p

that is so strange.. why limit the warranty to just local if we buy here.. really makes no sense for us who don't just shoot in s'pore.. :dunno:

agreed. somemore with the price of lenses in SG, dunno which tourist would want to buy lenses and accesories here.

I think more and more organization getting screwed in their corporate directions. Recently a share hosting site (very popular one) also did the same mistake and now most of the ppl switching to other sites, If i am getting international warranty from HK/US with cheaper value than SG then i will go with that option.

That's good. Hope they won't change it soon.

Thank goodness that all my expensive lens purchases are done. Anyway, if price difference is great, people will still buy from overseas. What is paying $65 to calibrate the lens compared to a saving of a few thousand dollars. US selling 200F2 for S$7200 while Singapore Selling for S$9300. Worth taking the risk? I say is worth it.

The only way to prevent people from buying lens overseas is to make their lens same price as overseas.

800mm US Selling for 10.9K USD and Singapore selling 19.3K SGD, almost 4500$ difference :o.
Forgot to mentioned SQ return ticket is somewhere 2.5K SGD (to NY).

I wonder if these price differences are the doing of Canon Singapore, or are Singapore's Canon retailers just more greedy than those of other countries? :dunno:

On Tues, at Canon DSLR training, the trainer mentioned the news to us:
1. this decision comes from Canon Japan.
2. this is worldwide and affects all lenses & accessories
3. which are packaged from Aug 1, 2010 onwards (so you can still buy lenses that are part of the old stock... i.e. packaged before Aug 1, 2010. Canon will still honor the warranty).

Yes, this is what I heard and seems someone also heard the same thing.

I wonder would it be possible Canon HK the person still don't know this policy? Or they will do it slightly late (say 1 month later)?

Bro CS TAN, could you please help us with this, if you happen to have chance to contact Canon HK?

The policy only really makes sense if it is applied worldwide. It tries to force people to buy from their own country if they want warranty cover. This means that shops will be able to charge higher prices because the competition from overseas is reduced. Not so good news for the customer though.

but this is really making no sense in buying canon products in the future.. why would people want to buy local sets when they are not even warranted overseas?

imagine the equipment failed when we are traveling overseas and it will become a white elephant throughout the entire trip.. unless we are willing to pay a premium for repairing overseas! :nono:

I think it would apply for people who is going to stay in extend days oversea. When I am on oversea assignment, I would always bring additional backup (bodies, lenses, etc). Coz even with CPS, I am still looking at a turnaround time of around 3 days. Don't think many clients would wait for my equipment to be repaired that long...

Furthermore the places that I shoot, is seldom near any CSC.

I think that is not the main point of international warranty. For most people, they just want to know that their camera will be repaired FOC if there is a problem. International warranty is valuable for people who want to buy something in a country they are visiting, and then use it in their country of residence. It does not mean that Canon will guarantee fast turn-around just so a customer's overseas trip is not spoiled. Would be nice if they did though.
