Canon G10

If my priority for a camera is to be good under low light, am i safe to say LX3 fits me better?

^actually both sucks under low light. your best bet would be DSLR because of the larger sensors. but in theory, yes the LX 3 would work better because of the larger aperture. i remember seeing a comparison of both cameras at dpreview but i can't seem to find it now. just google LX3 vs G10 and you should get quite a bit of information.

thanks! but if I wanna take pictures of my newborn... faster lens is better right? pardon me as I am new in photography.

When they mention "faster" lens they actually mean the one with a bigger aperture for the lens and not how fast it can focus. No matter how fast an autofocus is, it still takes some time to lock focus. This is especially so for small P&S cameras. The AF is simply not the same that found on a DSLR.

That said, how do you achieve quick shots with a camera like a G10 in order to capture fast moving babies. Simple, just take the focusing out of the equation. That way, you'd know that your baby will be relatively sharp when you snap the shot at a certain distance. Of course, the other factor is shutter speed - if he moves too fast and the lighting isn't good then there will be motion blurs.

Here's a more detailed writeup on this technique on a G9. Very good for Canon's G range because of the manual focus and custom settings.

Let me know if it sounds too confusing... ;)

Hi Guys,

Has anyone try G10 with a wide angle adapter? Thanks. :)

Hi G10 users.

For those who have not heard, Canon has announced the following update/fix.

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/dcp/firm-e/psg10/index.html

Products whose fifth digit from the left is 0 or 1 are affected.
****0*****
****1*****

Serial numbers with the following 4th and 5th digits can be sent to Canon for free repairs.
***50*****
***51*****
***52*****
***53*****
***80*****
***81*****
***82*****
***83*****

My (personal) G10 has the serial number ***81*****, and is included in both announcements.
I'm planning to send my unit in to CSC, and have them perform the firmware update while the fix is being implemented. The problem is, I cannot locate the Singapore Canon service center listing. Is there a need to call to make an appointment? Does anyone have their contact number/Email?

Does anyone else have a camera affected, and are you sending your in soon (even if you've not seen the problem)?

Thanks.

Thanks, HydroPop.

One further question.... I'm not going to bother with my warranty paperwork (and mine is extended by two years , to three, through the retailer), as the recent service notice is, I believe, applicable to all G10's, regardless of warranty status.

I'm also presuming they will perform the firmware upgrade at no charge since the camera is their shop.

Is this correct?

Thanks again.

My G10 is now with CSC.

What I find interesting, is the claim that even the second issue is fixed with a firmware update. I was expecting something hardware related.
Canon did not elaborate on why this was, then, not released as a user-installable firmware update (like the v1.0.2.0 update).

Reading the instructions, there seems to be no option to taking the camera to Canon for this fix.

Just bought my G10 today!
Had fun playing with it but its still a little complicated for a newbie like me.

How do I takes pictures of a subject with the background blurry? Can someone advise me on the settings that I should configure or any conditions that I should look out for?

That effect you describe is called bokeh. You can goodle it to read up on it. It is an effect due to a) very shallow depth of field due to wide open aperture or b) very high focal length (zoom). The aperture blade design also determines the quality of bokeh - but on a G10 it is a constant so do not consider it as you cannot change it.

To get a) set the camera to AV mode and choose the lowest f-value it can go. Then take the shot.

To get b) do as a) then zoom in to the max you can get. Then take the shot.

These 2 would be the maximum bokeh you can get out of a G10. Compare the 2 results and decide which bokeh effect is better.

On a DSLR, you can get more more bokeh because a) the sensor size is larger, b) more variety of lens with wide aperture (low f-value) and also greater zoom lenses (e.g. 500mm), c) variety of aperture blades (determines if bright spots look round, pentagon, or hexagon).

G10 is back from CSC. I brought it in May 8 (Fri), and they called on May 11 (Mon) evening. Firmware is now v1.0.3.0.

Paperwork indicates that it was a firmware upgrade and 'calibration' that were done.

Hi all,

Heard about the Canon buy back programme and called the service hotline just now. I was told that I have to psy 690 for G10 if I return my old canon camera to them. Entitiled to gifts given at retail price. Is this a good price as MS color now offers 770?

Hi guys!

Just bought a G10 from Alan Photo at Sim Lim.. great service by this friendly elderly man. It's damn sweet! Looking forward for some tips from all of you guys, still trying to figure out manual mode though. Any tips/sites I can look up for?
