Canon Eos 600d or 7d

1. do u need the AF and FPS.
2. feel the grip.
3. feel the weight.

i can know what i want from that

Erm I believe the current 7D and 5D2 already feature the high res LCD, just that it is 920k dots due to the aspect ratio.

Yeah although they are all high res LCDs but you will really see the difference when compared side by side with a 60D 1+mil dots LCD. I didn't realize at first after I tried both the 7D & 60D.

Honestly, the screen is the one thing i don't like about the 60D :) Not because it's bad, but because it's too good…

Almost everything taken looks great on the screen…so it makes me happy and not reshoot…but when i get home, i tend to find the images don't look as good as they did on the screen…so the screen is rather misleading at times…making you feel happy with every shot you take.

Haha yeah agree. But I also realise if my photos upload to my iMac will look better than my Acer notebook. So I think different hardware will also affect the image quality.

maybe should rent a 7D and see how it works firsthand. The user experience of 7D is quite different from 60D, and even more so XXXD series. Anyway, vary angle LCD still seems like a non essential extra for me. Even if u say shooting videos, you shoot high or low angles the vary LCD will help but imo the shots might be shaky when held in these position... so i rather get a proper rig... I mean you shoot HD but the quality of the shot is low is still no point right! I shoot photos using the viewfinder... if not, might as well get a PnS or m4/3... By the way, 7D viewfinder is very up :). My recommendation is go for 7D if u have budget, it will go a long way. anyway your budget should include the lens system as well, like others have mentioned.

for last time my 50D i was already having this feeling. Only when I review the shot on computer then i see the flaws. Shouldnt rely too much on the screen ba!

HI Kai,yes thats what my thoughts were since i have the budget for a 7d coz its goanna last me a long time. Planning a 7d with 15-85 kit.

Doesn’t always work that way. My 7D screen frequently doesn’t show slightly off focusing errors unless you really bother to zoom in all the way. I used to go back to my computer and as you said the photos did not look as good as on screen. Nowadays when I do portraiture I always shoot, check the screen, and reshoot another shot just in case. It is a good habit to cultivate and has nothing to do with the camera.

600D, 60D, 7D will all last you a long time when merely using in SG. Image quality wise they are nearly identical. Unless you’re going to the northpole like this dude, then you’ll have a weather-tight reason for the 7D.

TS, let me share with you how the 7D landed in my bag.

it was more than a year ago when i was shopping for a DSLR and i was eyeing the 550D as it was an entry body which will pretty much suffice my needs THEN.

so, i went to the Canon showroom at Vivo to look see a bit. played with the 550D and i was quite satisfied with it. next to the 550D was the 50D, since i was there, i might as well picked it up and fiddle with it also.

damn i tell you, the 50D felt so much nicer in my palms than the 550D. ok now i have 2nd thoughts about getting the 550D. ha!

ok since i already touched the 50D, i gave the 7D a go too, even though i did not even consider it in the first place.

BAD CHOICE! i picked up the 7D and looked into its 100% VF. BAM! i knew it, i must have it. and the rest were history~

gist of the story is, specs aside, ergonomics of the camera is just as important. we can talk paper specs all day long but if the camera does not feel good in your hand, it will just stay at home as another expensive paper weight.

i got my 7D with the 18-135. sold the lens after using it for 5-6 months. now on the 10-22 + 17-55 + 50/f1.8 + 85/f1.8 combo. :)

PS: i'm a hobbyist too.

this is a good combi especially for travel i think. My friend Defn is using this combi now.

weather tight isnt the only reason really. But true, the reason i decided to upgrade from 50D to 7D was because i need weather sealing from african dust.

well said.

Oh wicked! Did you have a chance to try out the 7d with a 15-85 ? Yes looking in the vf is heaven isnt it? Could not agree more with you on the part of how if feels in your hand.

had a brief feel of the 15-85 on 7D at canon photomarathon 2010.

focusing of the lens was quick, that was all i can derive from the hands-on. haha.

Almost same as you when I upgrade to my 7D. At 1st tot of just get the 60D, then compare the spec with 7D like not very much diff, both have it gd pt. When at shop, have hard time deciding when feel both the 60D & 7D. In the end it the feeling when holding the 7D win me over. I bought the body only. After few mth, got the 15-85mm lens. Much faster focusing, gd focal range for general use and gd IQ.

I say you should go for 60D + 17-55 if you can.

Yes I agree with you. 60D is a good semi pro camera. I owned one myself. I enjoyed the 9 points crossed type AF, the sturdy grip feeling, the long battery life & vari angled LCD screen. Review of the photos on the 60D's 1+million dots LCD screen is really stunning. Sharp and clear. Most probably will be implemented on future models like 7DmkII & 5DmkIII.

Wow, I am impressed: the 60 D has now been crowned has a semi pro body!!! Marvelous! Maybe, if we talk about it long enough it becomes a pro body on par with the 1D series...?!

But let's get it straight: Canon has "Rebel-ized" the xxD line with the 60D model iteration. Some features/advantages certainly have been lost - and the "Prosumer" designation has changed to "Consumer" for the latest xxD model.

To put it into practical context: if you own a real semipro body which is to say any body up to and including 50D you be would ill-advised to "upgrade" to 60D but you'd upgrade to 7D instead.

For you info, the 7D has already the advanced screen (Crystal Clear II), the 60 D still uses the older type (even though it offers a view more dots).

Cheers.

Hi TS,

my 2 cents worth but i might be wrong. True to most whom advise you which buying a 7D if budget allows is good. Well for the 600D, i feel if you wan to purchase the 600D due to its new den i rather you purchase the 550D which is cheaper and also very capable to match the 600D. IMHO either you get the 550D range or you go get the 7D as afterall its your call and your money, Cheers and happy shooting.

Dear TS,

IMHO, I believe that you would need to consider the following factors.
Besides the points raised by the other seniors who gave very valid reason to consider.

As my sig suggests, I started off with a 40D because a friend highly recommended it over the 50D. Like any other person I bought a 50mm f1.8 and I found it could not zoom. Like anyone constrained by gear, I started learning how to use my camera. Fast forward two years later, I dare say I have learnt and tried out my camera functions and upgraded to the 7D. Absolutely beautiful camera, never looked back.

My suggestion, do your own reading and homework (go to a camera store, talk to the staff and play with the cameras). If it doesn't sit well in your hands, event he best systems will not please you. All three cameras 60D, 600D and 7D are solid. If you wanna buy something that is more advanced, it saves you on upgrading later on. Invest later in good lens. The 60D and 7D would last you for a few years.

i was like u
thinking to get 60D or 600D

in the end i am using 600D and it served me well.
i straight away use the AV mode and i am learning, i never used the auto or the begineer mode at all... no point man...

do some read up and you can start to shot good pic.

my shots are more for my gf blogshop. no sports for me
normal clothes and jewelry shoots. :)

i am using kit II 18-135mm
will upgrade the lens once i have brush up on my skills

Having owned 300D, 40D and 5D2 and recently a 1D3, my advice to u is it doesn't really matter what cam u get especially now when the entry cam (xxxD) specs are really good. There will always be newer models coming out. I'll be hard pressed to tell a difference between 600D and a 60D picture. So look at your budget and invest in good lenses/bags/flash/dry box instead.

sorry to Hijack.if wanna shoot portrait,wedding function,7d or 60d?

Err.. up till now, I've only seen cameras with portrait modes.. maybe u wait for 70D come out might have wedding mode..

For now, I think a simple PnS should suffice..
