How does this affects the actual shooting environment?causing inaccurate exposure when shooting auto exposure mode in the dark?or you can't read the LCD panel in the dark as it will not give you accurate meter reading?

or
you can't read the LCD panel in the dark as it will not give you accurate meter reading?

In the daytime regular shooting, you won't be affected by it. Some claim direct sunlight into the lCD will affect but baring in mind the amount of light entering through the lens vs the LCD….you get the picture.
In total darkness at night, the LCD on will affect the exposure by about 2/3 BUT again, at night when shooting, you don't exactly use the LCD to see your settings right? I mean, you look through the viewfinder to compose and do your metering through the viewfinder..not the LCD…Personally, i only use the LCD to confirm things like ISO, Aperture size etc…once those are confirmed…i use the viewfinder for everything else so the LCD light is almost never on..

I believe this only really affect people who do long exposures and have to turn on the LCD to check the timer? But again…this ONLY affects IF you cover the viewfinder during long exposures…it's recommended yes, but how many of us actually cover it? More light leaks through there than the LCD..

bottom line…is it a problem? YES if you cover your viewfinder, shoot in total darkness, do super long bulb mode exposures and use the LCD with the light on very often…other than that..regular usage..i don't see how it affect anyone..but i also understand that when you pay $4k for something, it better not have any flaws however minute it is.

it better to drop a e-mail of the matter to canon sg.
See what they can reply on,rather drop down CSC, fuel, time and other expanse.

If there enough amt of e-mail regard the matter, they has to reflect back to HQ for response.

Full value for money is one thing. Stray light in a black box will reduce contrast and sharpness. I know many will say the camera is excellent as it is, but imagine you actually paid for something which could give you so much more.

Sometimes its not about user shooting with a lens cap on/off but its about the price
we paid for that cam that couldn't justify the error.

Yes, it can still be usable but for chaps like me, i save up for a few months just to have this cam.(We expect good QC from it.)
and what if they mention, "Change of Hardware Needed", it would be like "WTH!, you wana do ops on my brand new 5d MIII?"
God knows how many days/weeks ppl will have to wait to get it "sewed up". [given this scenario, i think even any photographers will be piss unless you are rich.]

Lets hope everything can be resolve without affecting our enjoyment of this cam.

No point ranting and put the blame all at canon.
This is one of the reasons why some people can put off waiting for problems to be solved before getting a "better" set.
There were users who paid more for the 1D3 that had problems too.
Doesn't mean u pay more,u expect no or lesser problems.

I don't have a camera to test now, let me know can you turn on the light of LCD panel while the shutter open.

From what I remember if we use bulb mode the LCD light automatically goes off when the shutter is open no?

after what catchlight posted, i was interested to see what is the effect of the lcd panel light on long exposures. thats what we as users are worried about right? if the light leaks in, then it ruins a beautiful photo.

i am posting 4 images here. kindly let me know which is the one that is affected by the light leak from the lcd panel. i can't really tell because i did not record down which was done with the lcd panel on.

the images are exposed at abt 7 secs each with the lens cap on at iso 6400.

not all are exactly at 7 secs because in a darkened room, without any other lights, i can't see the lcd panel.

i pushed those who were exposed lesser than 7 secs upwards abit in photoshop to boost any stray light.

yup. u can turn on.
Ok, so you can turn on the LCD panel while shutter open. That meand when photohraphers shoot in dark, it is advisable not to turn on the LCD panel to check setting while making exposure.

there is some changes in the exposure when the lcd is turned on. abt 1/3 stops difference. for those who are particular abt their exposure, might want to refrain from pressing the lcd light when u about to hit the shutter? :dunno:

On the 1D Mark III there is a custom function to allow the top LCD backlight to be turned on in bulb mode. With this setting enabled the top LCD will stay lit throughout the exposure period. Say if you capture an exposure of 10 mins the top LCD stays lit for 10 mins. If the 5D3 has such feature as well this light leakage issue might be pretty severe as it will directly impact the picture output.

Can any 5D3 owner verify if 5D3 has this custom function? Or the top LCD only stays lit for e.g. 5 sec?

Since no lens attanched, will take it as f1.0, so with ISO 6400, 7sec. What is the EV?

can explain what settings photo A B C and D are?

i know. i used to have the 1D3 before i sold it off to get the 5D3. the 5D3 does not have the function to stay lit as long as the exposure period. It stays on a few seconds only.

good qns. the ev is like -3 at least. haha.

the thing is, the lens cap is on the body when the pic is snapped.
