to prevent blur, you can either

1. bump up iso
2. faster shutter speeds ( since u're using M )
3. larger aperture ( maybe you can try using A instead? "semi-auto" may work better for you now )
4. shorter focal length (wide end of your kit lens)
5. use flash with diffuser ( like your closeups of the guitar )
6. train your handheld skills ( inhale deep, exhale then shoot )
7. forgot to turn your IS on ? ;)

for OOF shots, select just 1 AF point and not auto select points. keep the body stable and shoot, shouldn't be a problem.

i'm a noob too, so that's what i can come up with for now. definitely not exhaustive.

happy playing with the camera! :)

Hey,

Thanks for the reminder. Too bad, I don't have flash (except for the built-in one).
IS is on. prob the breathing and handheld thingy might need improvements.

thx.....

How is the video quality? Can it auto focus while shooting video? How is video in low light?

The questions you asked have been answered in the other 500D threads. If you can't be bothered to look for them, perhaps you can just check out this link http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/samples/eos500d/. As for auto focus while shooting video. Yes it can, but no you wouldn't use it.

yup, even built in flash will do too. just take note that the light will be harsh if u use it for closeups, so just diffuse it with tissue paper or something. ;)

that's pretty good for a newbie. looks like a studio shot though. haha. any ext flash?

Dear tester99, i do not know if its me only, but somehow i cannot stomach your comments on this thread itself. Not unless, you have some of your own shots to share. All pics here are not be commented on how well the pic is taken, much less asking for critique. No shots here, deserve a line that states, how young and green is the photographer. As in here, we are all looking at how well the 500D can perform. If you want to comment, please move on to the CnC corner.

Back to the main track, has anyone tried the video recording function of the camera itself? and anyone has a pic posted on high ISO performance? I'm considering reccomending a friend of my to purchase this...

maybe you're just too sensitive to criticisms. the TS didn't mind in the first place and i was sensitive enough to apologize in advance to him, in case he got offended by it.

in any case he mentioned giving comments in his first post, i stated blurry + OOF shots, and gave him tips on how to improve on his shots ( from my personal experience and not copy+paste from some article to show my sincerity ), so i don't think it's inappropriate at all.

finally, FYI, as a member of CS you should already know how to google for things like sample pictures of high ISO shots from 500d?

here's one i found in a blink :

hope it helps. peace out. :)

wow what? wow means fantastic ISO control on 500D??

if tat is so i am on the agree side too. normally people seldom set ISO 3200 for their shoot, hence setting down to 1600 or 800 will be marvellous too.....
