And the 35 segment matrix metering, right?

So in summary:

Faster CPP-> AF
Smaller (Lighter?)
35 zone matrix metering
7 Focousing points vs. 3
Faster motor drive (does it really matter? :p)

Canon doesn't have matrix metering. The Eos 30/33 has 35 zone evaluative metering.

I have the EOS 50 because of the (infra?)red AF assist light. Unobtrusive. I was wondering if I needed 7 focusing points instead of 3, until I realised that most of the time I set it to the middle one only, use that to focus, then recompose. So 7=3 as far as my shooting style is concerned. But I suppose with eye control (which mine does not have) it DOES make a difference.

Hi

one thing that has not been pointed out yet is the quietness of the motor drive in this series of Canon bodies.

the EOS 50 has another advantage besides the IR focus assist, and that is, it's slightly quieter in operation than the EOS 30.

actually, both the EOS 50 and 30 are relatively quiet machines when u compare them with the pro models (EOS 3, 1v), which makes them very suitable for concert shooting where you don't want to cause unnecessary disturbance.

i know of this Jap photographer whom i shot alongside with at a concert who insist on his EOS 50 when we enter the main hall, despite having multiple EOS 3s hanging around him.

He even used an original Canon accessory not sold elsewhere in the world (i think, i have never seen it), a noise dampener on his EOS 50. It's something that you can use to wrap your entire camera, miffing out any noise caused by the motor drive and the mirror slap.

This made the whole setup virtually silent.

(as an aside, alas, his efforts are kinda wasted because i was making more noise than him during shooting, which kind of distracted the audience anyway.....but that's another story ;p)

haha cool accessory! I was already thinking my cluck and grind was loud enough to make the cat turn its head (argh) at night...
are there any third party ETTL hotshoe2hotshoe cables?

Here are some points about the 30:

1. Huge range of flash functions : master/slave control, flash ratio control etc in a multiple flash setup. These features are only there on the EOS-3 and 1V.

2. An incredibly responsive eye controlled focus system. I gave up on my EOS-3, and the 50 was too slow.

3. A very accurate and fast AF tracking system. I feel it is as good as the AF tracking on the EOS-3.

4. True mirror lockup, like the EOS-3 and 1V

5. Dedicated DOF preview button unlike the 50E/50 which doesn't have one. The * button doubles as the DOFP on the 50.

6. Metal top and bottom plates - more robust than the 50

7. The quietest SLR I've used, including the EOS-5.

8. A really cool feature : you can program an external flash (or ST-E2) to emit the AF-assist but disable flash, or vice-versa.

IMHO, the 30 doesn't have one or two new whizzbang features - it is the combination of all these improvements which makes the 30 a great body. That's why I bought it.

As for the 50, the response is quite a bit slower than the 30, and the 300 is not programmable - no custom functions. I can't live without the film leader out and a few other functions :)
