Canon EFS 10-22 or Tokina 12-24

i popped by MS color yesterday and got a Sigma 10-20 DC for $888. took it for a trial shoot the moment i left the shop. never tried a wide angle before so i was impressed by the angle it covers. image wise quite sharp at f8.

i have no regrets purchasing it but somehow, it died on my canon camera after about a hundred shots. it's currently giving me this 00 aperature reading and gives my 350D an Err 01 everytime i take a shot. tried cleaning the contacts but it doesn't help. i think i may have gotten a dud. leaving for ms color to see if i can get it exchanged. it's been only 1 day after all.

You are right. Tokina 12-24 is meant for APS-C sized sensor cameras but it can still be used on film cameras with vignetting.

It can mount on a film camera but with the vignetting (dark corners), it's not going to be very useful. The only super wide that could be used on both film and digital without vignetting is the Sigma 12-24.

just a thought... i keep seeing people highlighting poor QC on Sigma lenses... is this a known fact? was contemplating the Sigma 20mm f1.8 but have very serious doubts now... sorry for the OT btw...

I feel the same too.

canon efs 10-22 - too bad only can be used on the newer bodies (20D, 350D)
sigma 10-20 - only good for digital body
Tamron 11-18 - ditto, smallest range too..
tokina 12-24 f/4 - fixed aperture. but quality wise debatable..lotsa freebies now at CP (i think)
sigma 12-24 - heard quality not as good as canon 10-22. only one for film (or full frame)

a compromise.... see what you are looking for.. if u're going for quality, without considering resale, then i say get the 10-22.

I am using the Sigma 10-20 for the 20D. It works great! BTW, the Canon 10-22 is a must to have if you're into wide angle photography.

tokina 12-24 f/4 - fixed aperture. but quality wise debatable..lotsa freebies now at CP (i think)

don't go for the freebies..outdated items! canon 300D LCD hood? :thumbsd:

Well,... I own the 10-22 EF-S lens... and it's not bad.. It doesn't have the colour saturation of the 17-35mm f2.8 L lens on my 5D,..but it is decent.. One thing,... you have to order the same lens hood that comes with the 16-35mm f2.8 L lens, and I strongly suggest that..

It is a decent lens for flare control.. considering the coverage, flare is not bad....and might I add,...much better than that of the 14mm f2.8 L.. As far as buying off brand lenses,... generally speaking, you really do get what you pay for.. There are reasons why they cost a lot less..

Pretty sharp even wide open, fastest (f3.5) at the wide angle (compared to all available options for Canon), fast focussing (USM!), good colours, low distortion and light/compact. That said, I would have gone for cheaper superwide third party alternatives if they were available when I'm looking for one (I'm more of a tele person). I waited a long time though for the hood which hasn't come in yet

But if you dont need the super wide, suggest to go for the 17-40 F4L instead which would work even if you upgrade your digital body in the future to 1 or 5 series.

you waiting for the EF-S 10-22 hood? TCW has it. I got mine from them.

not likely as it is a DC lens. vignetting will occur on full frame at 10mm

Sigma 10-20mm is meant for crop factor DSLR, so it can't be use on FF bodies. You can sill use it provided you like serious vignetting effect.
