Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM

It is not silent anyway. It has this electronic eeeeee sound when focusing. But it doesn't affect videos that much.

I use it as my permanent lens now, how this small little thing took over the 24, 35, 85 and 24-105 I will never know, but thanks to its light weight and really great all round usability it's a winner.

The "eeeeeeeeeeee" sound is very accurate but while I was filming it showed no problems at all. (at least to me) I rented it first.

Hi guys, Amazon is selling the lens at USD 139.99 with free shipping to SG. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-40mm-2-8-STM-Lens/dp/B00894YP00/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1384911498&sr=8-5&keywords=canon+40 Works out to about SGD 174.19(Google Finance), which is a bit better compared to the prices in B&S. Is this worth buying from Amazon, ignoring warranty woes?

Sure! If you don't mind waiting and the warranty too!

Great lens except focus accuracy may not be perfect on FF.

Don't forget to check and update to the latest lens firmware version.

I think the 40mm is a value for money buy. Size, weight, performance, price. STM is really quiet for video taking. It is a good all purpose lens, especially for folks who like to travel light and highly recommended for folks embarking on DSLR.

Of course it is not the perfect lens. The AF can sometimes be suspect. AF during vid taking is not fast enough.

I would strongly recommend anyone who wants to try this lens to get from Amazon. It is very cheap compared to local price. You may miss out on the local warranty support of 12-15mth warranty. This lens constructions is simple and not very complex. Should not require service for material or manufacturing defects.

This lens' centre sharpness is good. Below is a 100% crop of this lens shot wide open on my 5D3.

ISO12,800, f/2.8, 1/500s:

See the amount of details.. :D

at 12800 ISO and you are complaining about quality?! NEVER do a 100% crop anything 6400 higher and above. you'll have to cry yourself to sleep.

What complains?? :dunno:

Which one would you guys choose, between this and the 50mm f1.8? Solely on IQ.

I think the 50mm f/1.8 has a slight edge over the 40mm pancake in IQ. Some like to compare the bokeh of this f/1.8 with the other large aperture primes, which of course, due to its construction is not as "picture perfect", comparatively. bokeh f/1.8 vs 2.8. Other than that, it seems all other aspects, 40mm has the edge, size, weight, decent performance, stm ... :D

the only lens that stays on my cam body so far.

It has more than done the trick for me on numerous occasions. This lens is why I havent really seen a need to get a 35mm or 50mm lens. Great bargain.
