The 24-70 f/4 has a working distance of 3cm for 0.7x magnification? Not very useful. Any idea what's the working distance for say, 0.5x magnification?
Is there a formula or is lens-dependent or something? :dunno:

You want something more useful then buy a macro lens duh. You can't always have your cake and eat it.

For APS-C and m43, f/4 is certainly not attractive. I know because I used to own the Pentax 16-45 f/4 zoom lens.

But for FF, f/4 is ideal for travel and hiking. How many native m43 f/2 zooms are there? Zip, zilch, nada. If I ever join the FF bandwagon, ALL my zooms will be f/4: 16-xx f/4, 24-xx f/4, 70-200 f/4.

What use is 0.7x macro good for? Again, travel and hiking.

I already have the 100mm f/2.8 L. The macro mode on the 24-70 expands up possibilities without need for another dedicated lens just for the occasional macro during traveling. Already carrying 4 lens as a standard load and do not wish to burden myself with more weight. I don't expect the 0.7x at 3cm to be very practical but reach 0.5x at a further working distance may be more useful, hence the question.

It appears that this expensive L lens has a singular weakness at 50mm. IMO, a lens at this price is NOT allowed to have any optical weakness (compare 70-200 f/4L IS). Sigh...

The pricing for this piece of glass is not wallet friendly. If I were on fullframe i might go for the tamron 24-70mm 2.8 vc
