A 400 2.8 Mark II is one stop faster and USD 1000 cheaper at B&H, so you really have to want to pay through your nose for this zoom plus teleconverter function. A 400 2.8 coupled with a 70-200 f2.8 is both one stop faster at both ends and probably more versatile with greater fire-power as you can get up to 800mm at f5.6.
how much time you need to put on/remove a converter to your lens and start shooting in critical scenario?
how much af speed you lose with a normal teleconverter?
you should read the review posted by Errz on previous page.
it tells you clearly the advantage and disadvantage of this lens.
We know the advantage. We are just saying you need to sell a kidney for this advantage.
I will need THREE kidneys for trade-in! I know its inflation, but sometimes I really wish canon will consider raising prices much much more .......... then I have easy reason to jump ship. As it is I already invested too much.
But never mind, jus make do with what I have. But I jus feel Aarrrghh!

Guess he was too used to shooting with 500mm/600mm primes.
If you sell your kidney direct, one would be enough. If you deal through middlemen, 3 would not be enough.

Whether anything is worth to a person is up to the individual, so I hope we concentrate on discussion about equipment here.
It would be interesting if this 200-400 is reviewed against the new Sigma 120-300 F2.8 with tele extender either 1.4x (168-420 F4) or 2x (240-600 F5.6) an dof course the Nikon 200-400mm. One is about 30pct of the Canon and the other about 50pct.

Agree. And I'm sure the Nikon 200-400 will not worth much to any Canon user unless Nikon makes it with Canon mount.

you clearly dont understand what is the advantage of canon 200-400.
if you are familiar with ultratele lens and normal telecoverter then you should know how much af performance suffer with the tc on.(especially for tracking, ignore this if you shoot only still subject)
and how long you need to fit a TC in to start shooting after you found the target?
if you are familiar with ultratele prime lens then you should know the problem with composition (ignore this if you only shoot shy birds which requires more reach than anything else)

i think canon's 200-400 main advantage is flexibility to adapt to ever changing situation. Important especially on those who are on paid assignments whereby they cannot afford to lose a precious moment due to fitting teleconvertor.
Since Canon is first to have inbuilt convertor so they are raising the prices higher.
For hobbyists who will not be in serious trouble missing a shot might not find the price justified.

Can consider this, cheap but without the super-ultra advantage of the Canon 200-400.

What abt using adaptor.
Cos I am actually on two system and I uses adaptor so that the lenses can be share.
I know that are some disadvantages but this make it versatile.
i use adapters for different mounts but when you are trying for that elusive wildlife of bird in flight shot, the lack of AF lowers your success rate.
