of course there is a difference... with macro lenses in general the object you r photographing is at least 1/2 of the real size on the sensor. with real macro lenses like the ef 100 you re getting a 1:1 "magnification"...means: the object size and its size on the sensor is equal.
the question is how do you get a 1:1 magni or why cant i get this magni with my 24-105.
well the answer is quite easy...1. the construction of the lens and 2. the minimum shootingdistance to the object. with the 100mm macro you can get as close as 31cm to the object only at this time youre getting a 1:1 magnification (24-105 45cm). when your distance is bigger the magnification wont be 1:1. then the magni is 1:2, 1:3...depends on the distance of the object you r shooting. in digital life today some already talk of macro when using 1:4...but per definition its not macro...
hope this answer helps you... so with the ef 100 you would also get some benefit.

Some photos to share with all of you. ~ Coral ~
Not easy to take because of the water level. Certain angles cannot focus

I think TS is limited by the plane of glass infront of his lens:bsmilie:

Congrats on the purchase, it's really a good lens, I have one too and really enjoying it.

think about what u can achieve if u take it underwater! its a dream i always have but wont fulfil...:bsmilie:

No I took from outside. Actually is an aquarium full of different species corals. Actually I can go closer but due to the water contour, i have limited angles to shoot. :dunno: need more times to play around with it

you can fulfill that dream for $5k easily! MTL BBB! if you';re using a 350d i might be able to loan you some bits of kit

Also eyeing on this lens for marco but just for comparison sake. As I already have a 24-105 that came with macro mode, do I still need a 100mm Macro? I hope someone can advice me what is the different in using 100mm and 24-105 for macro shots.

Thank you.

A true macro lens gives you 1-to-1 magnification or "life size" image capture.
in the canon range only 50mm f/2.5 (does 1:2), 60mm f/2.8, 100mm f/2.8, 180mm f/3.5, and a specialized 65 mm lens does 1:1 to to 5:1.

Thereafter it depends on the body and a crop sensor should allow you to fill it more with the subject resulting in a perceived greater magnification compared to a full frame body. Technically the 1:1 ratio existed before crop sensor technologies so the inconsistency.

As far as I know you will not find ‘true’ macro in any zoom lens.

And a true macro lens optimized focusing and working distance, and ideal image proportions with "no distortion" and usually allowed for low light light shooting.

haha no thanks bro. i dun have 5k to spare sia. and i dont own 350D. i guess it'll remain as a dream...

Just got e 100mm macro. 340 non-grey set at TCW after trading in some lens.
Loving it.

Huh? TCW can do trade in ah? Whats the rates like for trade it?

quite bad. but me and my friend won some lens from the little red dress fashion photog competition and din have use for it. so went to trade and get a discount from there.

but the rates aint good. a 24-105L can probably only fetch 700-800 trade value.

well for my case, din really care how much i can with with the cheap lens sigma gave me so long i can get a chunk off the original price of 100mm :P

I also recently brought this lens, it's a great lens. Love it and it has been attached to my 400D body 95% seen brought.

I paid S$720 include GST at SL Sq 2nd flr shop.

But yesterday, I brought the Kenko Teleplus MC7 DG which is a 2X conversion Lens to go with it. I hope to get the subject closer (double my focus lens with some light drop like 2 stop).

Duno weather how the result yet, need to do a shooting tomorrow, eventually thought of getting the Extension tubes but change my mind later to 2X converter.

Hope can get what I want .
