+4 will reduce the focussing distance to 250mm. maginification factor is 50/250 or 1:5.

According to the excellent John Shaw's "Closeups in Nature" ...

Magnification = focal Length of lens / focal length of Diopter


where the focal length of the diopter = 1000 / diopter strength.

For example, a 3 diopter has a focal length of 333mm (1000/3). So the magnification of a 3 diopter on a 55mm lens would be 55/333 = .165.

I need some range for general telephoto, hence got to give Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro a pass. So, next available range is only from Sigma. What do you think about its performance and built? Say, butterflies as my macro subject.

Yah....It's really a very good lens....will be testing this lens again for portraits during the outdoor shoot with SLCC this month.

if you use this lens for portraits, suggest to shoot in RAW or custom WB for slightly warm.

Bumping this post up again.... for you guys who are macro lens owners what do you usually equip yourself with when you go for macro shooting trip?? I mean camera related stuffs...

I did some test shoots with the 100mm n 430EX... think something is missing.... :think:

what to bring for macro shoot. besides the macro lens, flash (I use two preferably), bounce card and diffusor, etc, also bring along area cleaning kit such as air blower, brush, and pincer. this is for you to clean up the subject area to remove spider web, dead leaves, specks of dust, etc.

For me it usually involves quite a bit of gear, which is why I'll only bring them when my only intent is to shoot macro.

Apart from the camera + lens:
1. 2 flashes
2. Bounce card & Omnibounce
3. Stroboframe + miniballhead
4. Extra batteries (for both the camera and flashes)
5. Blower + microfiber cloth
6. Monopod (a must for me)

HI Macro Experts,

I have a macro lens and a manfrotto tripod. But very often the tripod is too heavy to carry at all times ;p You guys think it is a good idea to get a monopod instead? Or should I just stick to my tripod and build up my shoulder muscles :bsmilie:

Need your advises! Also, what monopod u would recommend?

I never find tripods to be very useful for outdoor macro.
