Hey, thanks all for your valuable comments whether is it 'sour grape' comments or not as kiwi2 have put it ;p

I guess I should go rent a 70-200 2.8 without the IS first and try using in my environment to decide if i need the IS or not ya... well i guess if i had the $$$ I would have gone straight for the IS and not have asked you guys the question in the first place! ha! ;)

i had the no IS but sold it quickly for the IS. the 3 stop difference IS DEFINITELY DEFITELY WORTH IT !!!!!!!! YOU GET MUCH SHARPER SHOTS AND WILL NOT LOSE OPPORTUNITIES. DO NOT BUY THE NO IS VERSION

70-200 f4 IS, read from somewhere that the extra 4th stop takes 3sec to kick in

hello jeff... can elaborate on this? One needs to half-depress shutter and focus for 3 secs?

The IS will remain ON when the shutter button is half pressed.

"The IS in the EF 70-200/4L IS USM gives up to 4 stops but with a slight catch. It gives 3 stops within about 0.5 seconds like most other current IS lenses, but after the IS has been operational for about 3 seconds an extra stop of stability is available."

Whatever, All I know is that IS:thumbsup: :bsmilie:

i think it really boils down to what you need and how much you're willing to pay for it.
i shoot a lot of low-light and church events too.
the IS is good to have, but it's not THE thing to have.
however, if you can afford it, go for it! it makes life easier....

My personal take: I feel the IS is definitely useful, but overhyped. Again it boils down to what you use the lens for. Low light, without support, mostly stationary or slow-moving subjects, sure this lens rox. But at 1.5kg it is definitely not light.

Do not put down the non-IS just because it doesn't have IS. It is an excellent lens in its own right and is still used by many sports and photojournalists as their bread-and-butter lens. Get the lens which you feel best fits your budget and needs. I think the IS feature is good to have if you can afford it but not a "die die" must have thing. Best thing to do like ST1100 said is get a copy of each lens and try out both, and make your choice from there.

Hi ComB, Aiya.... I just reached back Singapore yesterday... din see yor thread in time... ya I was along the stretch of Bo Ai road. The whole stretch of road is selling cam stuff! Sorry din manage to check for you...

But some things I noticed.. you CANNOT test the lens with your cam unless you are going to buy it unlike back here! So in the end I just ran my fingers thru the 70-200mm 2.8 IS n salivated ;p

Also, they selling the lowepro Rover AW II for 4900NT there which is -> $250! TK is selling around $135 i think... so when I asked for the equivalent which is abt 2700NT, they unwillingly said yes saying that whoever was selling me at this price is not making money! Imagine from 4900NT reduced to 2700NT! Markup dam high man!

i very strongly recommend you borrow a 70-200/2.8 - any make/model - to try out for an event first. Coming from a 70-200/f4, the size and weight may throw you off quite a bit. Not only will you work slower, you can get tired much faster with the extra weight. Plus, whatever system you are using now to carry/swap lenses, you need to accomodate a slot for a much bigger lens.

If you're on 200mm most of the time, might want to consider a 200/2.8 prime. There's one in the BS going for $850. It is much smaller and lighter. i also highly recommend the 135/2, which i use in place of a 70-200/2.8 for indoor events. It's much easier to handle.

Hi ST1100, checked out the price difference between the 200/2.8 and 135/2. Both are about the same in price. Any recommendations on which is better in terms of sharpness, usability, weight, etc from you guys who owns them??

I got the IS ver .. Very Good Lens . Only the weight might be abit heavy to carry around. But once u get use to run around with it . Got $$$ buy is since it can help in low light. if not . non IS will work as well

Most important thing is "You Feel Happy About what You buy" Maybe u can save the money to do something esle ... :)

Good luck.
