Canon 6D to 5Dmk2, upgrade or downgrade?

Hi guys,

Recently I walk into a reputable second hand camera dealer to clean my camera and lens. I was advised by the owner to upgrade my 6D to 5Dmk2. I was told that 5D2 was a much better camera and was pro series while 6D was not even considered as pro series and cannot be used for professional work.

Later that day I met a friend who told me that it wasn't an upgrade at all because 6D had a better sensor than 5D2 and 6D could well do professional work. 5D2 is known to have a lot of focusing problems. My 6D had 6 months warranty left and I was told that it had the same value as the 5D2, so we traded 1 to 1 without top up. The other day I passed by the shop, I saw that it was selling for $500 more than the value we traded for.

I acted purely based on the advise on the owner, whom I regard to be trustable since he operates a reputable shop.

Please let me know if you guys think its an upgrade or downgrade?

This should have been posted before you made the trade.

Thanks. I thought so too.

I.. I.. I dunno what to say..

I hope you learned your lesson now.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. Maybe you can tell me in terms of specifications. I see if I can pay to buy back the camera...

at this point of time why still thinking about is upgrading or downgrading?

and do you really need change to a "better" camera every year or two?

So what is professional? using a big and pro looking camera are professionals? really?

FYI, there are many professionals using entry level cameras to make money, like myself, I also using a entry level to shoot for money now.

there is no point to cry over spilled milk now, hold on to the camera and make full use of it.

or sell it off and get another better camera if you can't bear seeing it.

Firstly, it really not about whether if its an entry or pro camera. I paid for a 6D, I should get a 6D's worth. Whether is it for hobby or work or just throwing away money, thats really up to me. What matters is that he told me a 6D to 5D2 was an upgrade and I took his word for it for his reputation sake because I have dealt with him in the past as someone I trusted recommended me to his shop... and if he dare to make a statement like that, 5D2 better than 6D, then do it in front of everyone and I accept that it is his really his opinion about it and move on. Let others judge what his years of experience amount to to think that trading a 6D for a 5D2 is really what he'd advice his customers.

If he'd not say that to anyone that 5D2 is better than 6D, I think he really betrayed my trust. Its the misinformation that really upsets me. I can waste that few hundred, its fine by me and I don't mind being known as ignorant or stupid... but I'm not sure if as a businessman, he wants to be known as a dishonest dealer after being in the industry for so long...

And if need be, I will sound the alarm to let people. He probably thinks that I'm a one off business...

Matter over. No point getting upset. Both are capable camera bodies and quite honestly camera bodies don't hold value compared to lenses.

Take it as tuition fees. At least you are getting another decent full frame and not trade a full frame for a lower priced APS-C.

As for the shop owner selling higher, that's normal. He is running a business. But bear in mind that the onus is on the shop owner to sell the camera. One day don't sell is one day lose money. Whereas you now have a decent camera on hand to take photos.

That is such a lie that that owner have told you .. he really schemed to make u feel inferior of your own camera and downgraded ...
I got "cheated " by another lens cleaner at peninsula years ago.... from then on. I have never step into his shop again ... making friends with him is a mistake and gullible for me

I got it near peninsula too. Wonder if its the same company. Mistake.

I'd like to know, if a third party vendor cleaned your camera, is your canon warranty void? I'm buying back my camera with a topup... they said they have serviced it.

-- The irony:

If you think that you switched to 5Dmk2 because you believe what the shopkeeper said (better spec, more "pro" body), then people here assume you are a pro -or at least on the pro level- who demand the best camera body. But then again, as a pro, don't you think you shouldn't make this kind of mistake?

-- End

Sorry if I sound harsh.. Just can't believe you got cheated this way. I also wonder what the shopkeeper say when you told him/her you want your 6D back.

I'm guessing that it depends on how "deep" they clean it. I mean.. every photographer clean their gears, don't they. Blow dust away, wipe clean optics & body, etc..

But learning from your mistake, don't you think it's better to call & ask this question to Canon SG directly? :)

TS... have you use your 5DmkII? I believe you have already used your 6D before and have some photos in your computer. My advise is to go out and test your 5DmkII and see if you like the handling and IQ. If yes, then, save your few hundred dollars and use the mkII. If no... then buy back your 6D.

Im not a pro. I just like to buy pro stuff. Just take it as I'm wasting money. But thats not the point. The point is, he lied. In his own words he said "6D is not a pro camera. Its a amatuer full frame camera." I just called up, he said whether or not its an upgrade its up to every individual to see it. 5D2 has a better body..." thats about the reason I got. Now to BUY BACK my camera, I got to top up money... Well done.

And yeah. Thanks for the reminder. Really cannot trust these people... Gotta do our own homework.

I used my 6D. I really like the low light performance. Just the HIGH ISO performance is enough to convince me its way way better a camera than the 5D2. I wonder how is it even an amatuer FF camera as he claimed. -.-" At higher ISO, 5D2 is unacceptable.

Thanks for the suggestion though! :D

I would say u made the wrong decision to me.
and ofcourse the shop has to mark up to earn some profits.
the reason i guess he asked for trade is because 6D is easier to sell than the older 5D2 and moreover yours come with warranty.

The 5D2 should be similar to the 6D in terms of functions although the 6D is very much the entry level budget FF option for consumers. The 5D2 was probably something that was used by quite a few professionals back in its day so the shop is not entirely wrong when they say the 5D2 is more of a pros' camera than the 6D.

The thing that stinks about this is the feeling that the second hand shop you sold your 6D to did not seem to be entirely upfront, choosing to be selective about facts and putting things into context.

My suggestion is to forget about trading again with that shop unless you really get a good deal on the 6D which you have just sold. Plus please bring along another friend or two who really know their stuff well. Otherwise I would cut my losses and get a 6D off BnS, assuming you know how to check for flaws.

it is really hard to say which camera is better, but if u asked me probably both are similar or on par to me.
some things are good in 5D2 and some are good in 6D so it is the person who looks at which factors are more important in a camera. and also 5D2 is pretty old model and have u checked on your shutter counts? If shutter counts is more than 50K,i would dare to say u have downgraded.

Yes, indeed. Stupidity on my part. I understand that he has to make profit but at the expense of his integrity... betraying trust... I dont know leh. I cannot accept it. You make a decent living cleaning sensors and lenses and earning difference selling consignment items la... dont do all these just to earn that one off profit. For what? My money can earn back, but their reputation is at stake. I stop short of naming and shaming them because I know everyone need to make a living. But cheating is what I really hate. If need be, I will not hesitate to expose them. I will never walk into the shop again.

I bought a 32gb cf at $128, China CPF a $55, 3rd party batt at $45, Screen guard all these... I think somewhat over priced, but nvm i still buy because I trust them to have integrity, let them make profit because zi have a "good deal" on the camera.

Disappointing.

Thanks for your suggestions. Yeah, Im getting back my camera for a top up of about $150... if $150 is all they are worth, so be it. Days before I called up to check on 85 1.2L and 16-35 2.8L. Lucky I havent buy.

I was told peninsula is like the simlim of cameras, not sure if thats true...
