wah this one I dunno liao. actually never went to CSC before :P

From my understanding, any body or lens that is still under warranty is free calibration. BUT if u wanna calibrate a body with warranty and a lens without warranty, then the lens is chargeable. I can't remember but I think the cost is written in the website (don't remember where of canon sg) and it's something like from $60-$120 if I remember correctly... *shrugs*

No charges if under warranty. as for limit.. if u think its not done properly, u can always go back again .

Does CSC charge to calibrate a lens to your new camera (5D3-under warranty)? If so, how much do they charge?

If it's a free service, is there a limit to how many lenses you can calibrate?

CSC doesn't calibrate the body, only the lens, this was what they told me. The charge is about $60 per lens. Not sure if it will be FOC if the lens is under warranty...

hmm.. ask u all hor, under what circumstances you will send your lens to CSC for calibration to your cam body? What kind of defects, or how serious the defect is before you send?

There are some people (particularly professionals) who bring their new lenses or bodies in for calibration after each new purchase. They do it every time.

Two years ago, I suspected an AF issue with my 7D and brought it into CSC. They asked me to keep my lens with them too. After inspecting the camera they found nothing wrong but the focus of the lens was a little off... nothing serious. They calibrated the lens and gave me back my equipment (all FOC). Frankly, I never saw better focused pictures since then. I've since taken another lens and had it calibrated. Same thing.... the difference in sharpness was easily noticeable.

Here is an example (taken with my calibrated 100-400 - focus on the nose - taken from about 10 meters away - 100% crop):

Would be nice if they would ship it properly calibrated from the factory! ^^

If this 5D3 is really a very very good cam (fast AF like 7D and super good low-light, etc etc), would you 7D owners sell off your 7D's? I'm thinking of doing that...

I think I would...

The lens calibration is done with a specific camera body. So it will be sharp with that body n not necessarily another. So don't think it's technically possible leh.

I've always wondered about that. So does that mean if you have CSC calibrate to one camera and have a second camera, the lens will be calibrated to the former and not the latter?

Holy... that's damn sharp! If you don't mind, can comment based on your exp, do you think my lens (50L) has sharpness issue?

Focus is set to the cat's bell. I know 50L's sharpness at wide open isn't great, just want feedback from experienced users :P

In my opinion, there is significant softness wide open. As the aperture opens to f/4, depth of field increases and the focus plane begins to include the bell. I can't tell if there's front or back focusing in your samples, but I would suggest that you bring it to CSC for calibration.

hi mate, nothing wrong with your 50L. Only thing wrong is focus shift at smaller aperture which is a known issue for this lens. :) Try calibrating the lens, my copy works fine at -10 microadjusted

I'm thinking about it too but haven't made up my mind. I would miss the 1.6x reach.

I'll prob get a 1.4 TC just in case I need the reach. I guess with the improved iso performance, the extra stop should be manageable...

HArd to believe this.... i thought it's 5dX... i want the X not the III

hahaha

I think u will hv ur 5dx this year. It may come with 45mp ff sensor, to compete against d800.

Thanks for the reviews :)

I bought the 50L knowing its short comings especially at the wide aperture area. But the softness at f/1.2 is not satisfactory (after giving consideration of the weakness of this lens), even with centre-focused pictures. Will be sending it to CSC for calibration.. haha!
