Canon 550D

the 550D is no doubt tempting man...i want the high ISO performance! but til i get a hands-on with this camera its hard to tell if its worth switching to from 50D.

I don't think it will be worth it. Why would you want a smaller, slower camera? If you wanna switch, then switch to 7D or wait for 60D, if it ever comes out. Otherwise, I suggest you keep the 50D. It's like you own a mercedes e-class, and then change to the c-class just because the new model c-class has more features.

Even Apple computers costs a lot less than they used to be.

erm, no they do not. i have owned g3 and g4 and now intel based PBs and MBPs and each time i look at mac pricing, have always been similar price points and certainly at same market segments.

The specs look pretty good. But... how come canon doesn't wanna put the quick dial wheel instead of those 4 buttons at the back of the camera? I used to own 400D, and those little buttons drove me crazy at times. Not very user friendly imo.

"market differentiation"

:bsmilie:

regardless of product, technology always filters downwards from flagship models.

how to expect a Digic V from an slightly above entry level camera when the flagship 4 levels up still using Digic IV? :bsmilie:

at times like this impt to remember the adage - better to spend money on lenses than on new body... eyes on the prize, eyes on the prize

I wanna get Canon 500D but today I just checked and realized 550D is coming out. Damns.

Now confused. Which one should I get?

Well, if you are not too urgent to get a cam yet, maybe you wanna wait for a while? If it really arrives here in early March as one of the bros here have mentioned, then the price of the 500D will probably go down to make way for the new series.

By then, depending on your budget, the value of the 550D and the price drop of the 500D (hopefully) you can decide on which one to get ya?

Just IMO...hope it helps..

:D

;p

To make those who got 500D lately....let's hope 550D is not going to be a like the recent Jap top manufacturer...AF focused out suddenly or will not stop focusing....etc...kekeke

I used to have this thought. But there again, as the manufacturer's point of view perhaps if the new sensors are introduced to the top-notch models straight away, there are also risks involved:-
1) To compete with other makers with their lower range of DSLR. Eg 500D to compete with Nikon D90
2) To ensure there is no surprise complains or "petitions" from users like us to improve the assembly. Such that they move up the ladder of flagships concurrent with the various revisions through many feedback or complains.

Could not think much of any better reasons.

so it's a sign that future mid-range models will have higher MP? 30MP for 5dmk3?

As a rule of thumb, should always get the newer model as it is packed with new features & has lower depreciation.

In fact, I had ordered a 500D from the CSC under the privileged buy back scheme and I had to changed my order a few days ago to a 550D. Just need to pay extra $20.

Was told by Canon that the body will arrive sometime 1 week after US launch. That means roughly first week of March. I am prepared to wait as I already have a 20D, which my 550D will replace (for my wife's benefit as it is smaller). After almost 6 years since my last DSLR, thought it is time for a newer model. Would have waited for 60D but xxD range is not under the privilege buy back scheme.

Yeah hopefully the 500D price goes down so that I can just get that and still have more money for other things or maybe a lens.

How much do you have to pay for the 550D?

Nice~!
Did you paid the same price as 500D other than the $20 extra charge??

EDIT: 3 person mega holy spam on the same question.

So in total, how much you paid for the 550D through buy back scheme?

Canon Singapore has not confirmed the price. Suspect it will be higher than the current one for 500D. But I am prepared to pay a bit more for the newer features. The price will be confirmed at a later date.

I guess it iwll be $1399, which is the launch price of 500D.

Enticing the Light has commented on the questionable move Canon has made.

Myself i wonder if this 18MP sensor is going to be on par with 7D (unlikely), and given the worsening noise levels of the xxxD series sensors, i fear this one is gonna make for some "screeching" photos in low light.
I checked the ISO samples from dpreview. ISO1600 is good, ISO3200 is not bad, quite usuable also, it is only a shy difference from the 7D big brother in terms of ISO performance.

Oh yeah, ISO6400 is pretty bad, so ISO12800 is out of question. However, I find it an improvement from 500D.

However, I still want to wait for dpreview's full fledge review, as well as reviews from other side. So far so good.

And, marketing 18MP with full HD video recording at 30fps is really going to put a great pressure on Nikon D5000 & D90.

any proof on ur claim that newer model depreciates lower?
it seems to goes against my experiences for the last 6yrs of DSLRs.
