heard of the website for people to rent their lenses.. was thinking to rent one too..

No such thing as a must in this case lah.
So get the best 50mm that fits your budget.
Yes, usually better wide open. But for this lens, wide open is pretty soft.

hey thanks. even i am new.. there are ppl giving comments.. I thought this thread would end up empty!! kudos to u guys!! anyway guess i will be getting the 50mm f1.8 lens for now.. to have the feel of the BOKEH effect that most u guys are saying!! but i was wondering if i were to take esplanade? can i use this lens??
to get used to the FOV (frame of view) since you have 18-200, you can try fixing it at 50mm and walk around with it for a while, don't zoom in and out. prime is very different from zooms that way, cos your legs got to do the zooming. after you take a few pictures go home and create blur effect with photoshop... then no need to buy 50mm/1.8 already... see i just save you $130! ;p
Yes u can but don't think of wide-angle shots unless u stand somewhere at city hall area. For FF cams will be eye-view and on a 1.6x body will be 80mm which is close to portrait view.

i was trying to say there is no such thing call MUST, and was trying to draw an inference from another instance that it's a must to get 85L to shoot portrait

You can take anything with that lens - the lens itself will not restrict you in any way. But it's your call whether 50mm focal length and the resulting field of view (considering also crop body) is sufficient or useful. Take your 18-200, put it to 50mm and take a walk. See whether this field of view is useful for you (and resist zooming). You can also achieve a certain bokeh with your lens, just read up about the factors that contribute.

By the fact that you own an EF 18-200 IS lens, regardless of which body, possibly 50D, you already have a pretty good dslr system. I will suggest you shoot more often, analyse your shots, read more on photography in general, especially on how you can manupulate your settings like aperture, shutter speed, ISO, metering etc., to improve your photos. Once you have graduated from more exposure to your system, you will answer your own question on what a 50mm f1.8 is good for. At your stage, it's not the equipment, but how well you know your system and how you can control and manupulate it that is more important.

I bought this lens, never used it, it slid off the table, dropped 2 ft and broke into 2.....if you need it for still life, get the 1.4 or the 1.2....this lens is too fragile....
I picked up the broken lense and the whole thing is plastic, held on by 2 to 4 pcs of 2mm plastic hooks.....sigh....
Personally, camera lens is an investment. Safe to save up, put off the purchase and buy a good one than use the upgrade route, you save a lot of money.

Don't expect too much for a $100+ lens.

It is not what I would call a "must have" lens.
It is what I would say, "a lens you should probably buy if you are not rich but want to learn more on photography".
My reason for the statement, "Learn more" is that you are using a prime lens ... you have to think more.
No simple zoom to frame your shot, you have to think about composure more and use your legs to zoom.
It also offers a much shallower depth of field than your kit lens (18-55) this is a learning thing also.
It is also a faster lens; try using it outside on a bright sunny day....try using it at night time.
It is a good cheap and sharp lens to help you in learning about taking photo's.

U r Right L lens are designed for dropping at more 3 foot from a height place and guarantee to continue working after that. Other lens are toys in comparison
