Canon 500D (T1i) vs Nikon D90

I don't know too much about Nikon's history, but did the D90 sensor mark the beginning of Nikon's change from CCD to CMOS sensors? And 12MP at the time was pretty mature by then. Would that explain it?

aiyoh. Don't test my memory. I think D300 is also using a CMOS sensor.
12MP being 'mature' is not really relevant. It's not like they used a standardized 12MP sensor from years ago.

I'm reading some reviews now. It seems that the Nikon 16-85 has the sharpest picture quality for a walkaround lens. Would you agree? Can't get past a little bit of sharpness and distortion issues though from what I'm reading.

The Canon 24-105 L series would have been lovely...on a full frame sensor. It loses the wide angle end a bit too much for me. If I went for a Canon, I'd probably get the EF-S 17-85 lens as my walkaround. Some compromises, but a pretty good all round performer.

Sorry mate. I haven't got any personal experience with the 16-85. I do think it's hard to manufacture a lens that covers WIDE to medium telephoto (at a decent price) without introducing distortion at certain focal lengths. If i'm not wrong, canon's 17-85 is a fair bit cheaper than Nikon's 16-85, am I right?

hi TS

this is my opinion. it would be better if you could have a go at a camera personally. nth beats that. coz reviews are written sometimes to a certain bias-ness. And it get all confusing. May i suggest you rent a camera of your choice. and have a personal field test. that would certainly help you in making the decision. rather then read all the reviews and come out confused.

to zerocoolastra. no offence to you. and it is my personal feel here. i know your intention is to help the newbies. applaud you for that. But if you arent sure of the other camp. then i suggest you not commenting. im sure you have a wide knowledge on Nikon history. Good for you. you seem to step on ppl tail too many a times. not an attack but a feedback.

cheers TS

Ok well after a lot (too much, lol) of thought, I basically have the following options (prices based on digitalrev.com website):
Canon 450D + EF-S 17-85 lens package: SGD$1580 (keeps price affordable and I could carry the lens over to future camera body)
Canon 500D + EF-S 17-85 (doesn't come in package unfortunately): SGD$1992
Nikon D90 + 18-105 lens package: SGD$1814
Nikon D90 + 16-85 lens package: SGD$2243 (really pushing my budget...I want a nice Manfrotto 190CXPRO3/4 or 055CXPRO3/4 tripod too).
Nikon D5000 doesn't come with a lens package except the 18-55 lens which I don't want. Price would be virtually the same as the D90 anyway with the 18-105 or 16-85 lens.

Yep. Really need to sleep on it I think. Also need to go back to Cathay Photo and have a good hold of the 450D to see how well I can tolerate the ergonomics.

Prices from digitalrev.com
Canon EF-S 17-85 lens: SGD$722 (cheaper as part of a package, but not available with Canon 500D)
Nikon 16-85 lens: SGD$985 (again, cheaper as part of a package)

Is this a reflection of what somebody commented along the lines of Nikon lenses tending to be more expensive than Canon lenses? Or just in this specific case?

FYI, i am a canon user but i reccomend my own brother for D90......

Hmm for 1 part it sure seems strange becos if ur own bro is going for the same brand u guys could share and invest lens tgthr!;)

But its really a temptation to have a different brand of camera around the house to play with:think:

Honestly speaking from my point of view.

Canon for the wide variety/price of lens.

Nikon for its fantastic cam body ergonomics, UI and well-built budget lens(18-105, 18-70 etc).

Im a Nikonian btw, no offense to any side.

EDIT: Hey, MelbourneGuy. You sure D90 w/ Kit Lens cost a whopping $1814? Maybe u wana try other shops?
psssssst~fyi, most of D90ers got their D90 w/ Kit lens @ $1650 +/-

When there is X vs Y, the thread is always so popular. :bsmilie:
Too many choices sometimes is really a bad thing.
Do you love photography? If yes, which brand of camera you are holding does not really matter as long as it gets your job done.
Technology advancement really spoilt us. :(
Instead of spending time wondering which brand is better, why not spend the time on studying how to take better pictures ? :dunno:

I totally agree. Of course, I lack the experience to back up my claims, but I personally feel that I like Nikon bodies more but Canon lenses more. Damn :)

heheh I don't want to go down this path. I don't have enough evidence to back up my opinions! :)
You do need to compare apples with apples though, which includes (but not limited to) materials used, solidity, maximum aperture, image stabilisation, and focal range.

TS, go for nikon d90.........if don't like nikon lens then go for 3rd party.

I thought about this but generally when you go third party you lose IS/VR and USM/Silent wave motor focusing, right? And the range isn't as great as the original manufacturer.

Just a casual observation, from what I see walking down the street. A lot of Nikon users tend to use third party lenses. More so than Canon users...just from my observation. Could just be the days I've been looking.

Healthy debate on a forum is fine I think. Like having an argument during a meeting. As long as no name-calling or personal insults, I think let the debate continue.
When I voice my personal opinion, if I don't have the evidence to back it up, I make sure I let it be known. I don't advertise myself to be a Mr Know-It-All.

Most CSers who are DSLR owners tend to belong to only one camp. Thus if we all were to refrain from commenting because of our limited knowledge of the other brands, this forum would become quite quiet.
I'm very careful not to make comments like 'Brand A makes better flashes/lenses than Brand B', especially if I don't have evidence to back myself up, because these comments start brand wars.

renting equipment to test is a valid point to make. It was one of the things I was considering when I thought of upgrading. However, I did find it to be expensive. Imagine if I rent D90 + lens for 1 weekend, and then 50D (or 500D) + lens for another weekend. Then what about the other brands? ~cough cough~ not within my budget. Have to search for very generous friends :)

errrr, i dunno. maybe is what i mention exp len compare to canon so you often see nikonian on 3rd party.

TS, i think now the best advice anyone would be able to give u is to go down to a store and test. Get bothe the D90 and 500D both with the 17-55 f2.8 equivilant to test and see for urself. Feel the camera, see which is more comfortable to you. Use different settings and look at the results if you are still so unsure.
