Canon 500D (T1i) vs Nikon D90

Oh, you just said exactly the opposite of what the review I posted says with regards to exposure...hmm...

I find exactly the same as you regarding noise and sharpness. In the sample images I've seen posted online, I find the noise and sharpness much better on the 450D, especially in the darker areas.

Actually I suspect the culprit may not be necessary be the sensor of 500d and 50d.

Putting aside 5DmkII, I have noticed ever since Canon introduced DigicIV processor, it seems that their pictures have more noise to them.

Why I mentioned this because I used to have their compact IXUS860IS which uses DigicIII processor which really impressed me with the low noise and fantastic video quality (although VGA Only).

When IXUS870IS was out (with DigicIV processor), I thought it should be better and sold my 860IS to buy it.

However, I was quite disappointed with it's noise level and video quality that I sold it off few weeks back when I got my LX3.

Probably it's just me, but this may be one of the reason why 450d is performing a bit better than 500d in noise level.

Hopefully Canon should improve again in upcoming DigicV in 60d which "suspiciously" retained the 15MP...:think:

I did some comparison at Courts Tampines...

In terms of noise, at ISO1600 (max i can test with 450d anyway), 500d do have a bit more colour noise than 450d, esp at the shadow and darker areas and it's seems not as sharp as well.

After shooting, I used the LCD to view and zoom in to the max.

Probably 500d VGA resolution is better, so show more noise...

As i said, it's using my consumer's eyes to give comments, must wait till experts to advise for more accurate accessment.

u sure u shooting in raw only?

some camera has inbuild raw -jpeg conversion that automatically corrects many things (CA for nikon d90).

Well I really want to learn how to make fantastic images...so I want to learn all about post-processing in Photoshop or whatever tool I decide to use. For the nice shots I plan on taking anyway. JPEGs maybe if the picture was only intended for Flickr or something like that.

Good question actually. Do most people shoot JPEG or RAW (or if shooting both, which one do they actually use?).

I know there are certain things the 500D will correct in camera for JPEGs. But my major bugbear with it is the noise, and paying for movie mode which I'm not interested in. At least the nice-to-have things like JPEG corrections can be done later on in Photoshop anyway. That's my line of reasoning, feel free to lend some advice if you think I've got it wrong.

Always shoot with RAW - I think - there are RAW to JPEG conversion that is better compared to the on board (camera) one.
Beside - for me - if I think digitally, pc/laptop is the best place to do post processing, as well as converting RAW to JPEG, I mean you know, being digital, pc is a lot more powerfull than the on board.
But this is definitely my personal view.

you are right that post processing with software like photoshop can make a plain-jane picture looks fantastic, and raw just makes it easier to edit.

For me, i normally shoot in jpg if just casual shoots at home or simple outings. While i shoot in raw+jpg if special occasions, like posting with mickey mouse at disneyland. Also will use continuous burst shoot to ensure i will get at least a few good ones as the special moment is too good to be missed.

dun look down on in house camera conversion...these are part of the reasons D3x d700 d300 are more expensive -

i shoot jpg mainly. i upload almost all my photos, would be a nightmare to convert all of them on a weekly/daily basis. only on impt shots such as wedding i use raw - the only reason for using raw is mainly white balance, especially in impt in wedding as groom is black and bride is black, wb often go haywire

TS, do consider a good tripod (plus a good head) too.

I am. I intend on getting Manfrotto's 190CXPRO series or their 055CXPRO series. Just not too sure which one to get yet.

Hey, give the man a kit kat(break), he's into the details cos his personality trait is HC -Highly Compliance. He'll read the whole manual on swimming, test the water for temp, PH, decide on which best swim gear, b4 jumping or climbing or diving into the pool:sweat:.

So he'll do the same when it come to investing Big$ on a System which will eventually end up like $10k-$20k:think:

I'm a newbie, and I don't know as much as you do. That's why I'm here, to ask for advice I'm not trying to start a flame war.

Weather sealing is something I like in lenses because I want to avoid dust in them. The camera body has a dust cleaning system for its sensor.

And the statement from Ken Rockwell that sealed the deal for me was "The D40 is the only camera you will ever need". Lol The bit about me "hating Nikon" because of Ken was a joke, hence the smiley face.

Definitely prefer lighter for travelling around, but not at the expense of stability and making sure its a good height without the centre column extended. Somebody said I should make sure the tripod + ball head + camera is about eye level with the centre column down. The 190CXPRO is a bit below eye level, so I have to bend down a bit. The 055CXPRO is right on eye level, meaning I'd possibly have to shorten the legs a bit to get it exactly where I want which is a real pain trying to make all the legs the same lengths.

i agree. tats why i traded my 190 for a 055.

but a 055 plus ball-head plus vert grip (w legs fully extended) will cause me to tip-toe a little. i am 1.73m. one reason why i do away w the vert-grip now.

jokes aside, i find tripod essential in bringing out the best from watever equipment.
