CANON 15 - 85mm and 18 - 135mm

if i had the money to get 15-85... i'd rather get 2nd hand 17-55 f/2.8... IQ-wise, 17-55 is generally thought to be the best among crop lenses...

yes, probably that is also why the older 17-85mm USM wasn't that popular also... ppl use it as it's the kit lens for 40D (I think??) ...

It is up to individuals; whether "waste of time" is at your own discretion. No need to debate over it.

errrr.. i not debating la.. i not even getting either one of these lens.. just stating what are the pros and cons that i can see .. since the TS is comparing these lens and i just want to share my thought over them

chill ... :)

I am also trying to explain to you that whether "waste of time" is up to individuals when you said that it is a strong phrase. There is no right or wrong.

well i think we have to wait for the reviews of the 18~135 and 15~85 to be out before we can conclude

if the 18~135 has lower IQ than the 18~200 , logic would tell you to get the 18~200

anyway lets update each other when the reviews are out :)
dpreview is kinda slow at writing reviews :(

btw i went to MS color to ask for the price of 18~135
the lady said it should be around $650+... they haven't unload it from the box yet, i said it is ok if it is too much of a hassle , then the lady gave me an estimated price

That's a big IF we do get any review of this lens at all, considering most (if not all) people will sell off this lens after getting 7D.....

Quite true, most people will sell it away to deflate the cost of the EOS 7D.

EOS 7D kit ~ $2,890
Lens ~ $650

EOS 7D ~ $2,240

Not a bad deal.

If i m to get 15-85mm, I will prepare to get another 70-200mm etc for longer focal length.

If I m to at 18-135mm, I will prepare to get a 100-300mm or 100-400mm lens later.

So depend on my needs, i will rather go for 18-200mm for conveniences.

Less likely to regret(to me)

Yup:thumbsup:fully agreed;)through my own experiences/circumstances too:)

Anyone know what's the going price of 15-85mm in the stores?

Nov? why canon never launch all the items together? Dammit.

tks for the update infinity

Hi, just called MS, this lens should be available on sale for $1150+/- (est) within the next 2 weeks. U aiming for this lens? I am considering either this or the 17-55mm f/2.8.

for some reason.. i find the 17-55 f2.8 more worth it (the f2.8.. speed..) ... well lets see how the 15-85 gonna score in term of PQ

Am considering this. On paper at least, it looks better than the 17-85. Has USM, FTM, IS. Has UD glass, similar to 17-55. and bigger zoom. Looks good. Thot of using it as a travel zoom, all-in-one etc.

Not really interested in 18-200 as i think these lenses cut corners. IQ may not be that good as smaller range zooms.

Only stopping factor is it normal F3.5-F5.6 aperture.

But then, a 15-85 F2.8lens would easily cost more than 2K and become the new king of non L lens.

well i do hope they will give the lens a review
dpreview will definitely give a review for 7D
since 18~135 comes together with 7D as a kit lens, i do hope they will give it a review too!!

hmmm i might be buying the 18~135
wondering how much the 2nd hand ones will cost

Though i know that this is a canon thread.. What about the Sigma lense that i mentioned for the 24 - 70 mm? I know if given a choice, most people would choose the original. But i do believe that third party lenses do give good results too.. Anyone who can give me some comparisons between the sigma 24 - 70 and the 18 - 135 then? I am leaning towards the 18 - 135 at the meantime though..

Check out the B&S corner, most people are selling it for $650. It will be difficult for you to find 2nd hand ones cos as I mention before, most will immediately sell it after getting their 7D. Good luck! ;)
