CANON 15 - 85mm and 18 - 135mm

Hi, what do you guys think of the 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6? Heard from MS it will be launch next week at $1140. I would like some feedback with comparison to the current King of EFS lens - 17-55mm f/2.8. Both have USM and IS. Thanks!

MS color is selling 750.

The link you indicated is 6 days ago, people are selling like 600 in B&S now after a website shows that the kit lens is better than it! :bsmilie:

u can't compare a kit lens and this lens? and u can't compare prices with a b & s forum and a shop? its like comparing a eaten apple and a fresh apple.

No offence but I am not comparing, I am merely pointing that a website did a comparison and the kit lens prove to be better (in certain sense). As for B&S and shop (RRP), I won't comment as what you describe above cos the same lens sold in B&S are new and still wrapped. IMHO, the difference is not much to warrant the monetary difference. Cheerio! :)

Has anyone read what other people are saying about 18-135 yet?

Quoted:

"The fact that they've made a really poor lens, crafted specifically for their top of the line prosumer single digit crop camera, is poor form. I'd think anyone who's looking at spending $2K on a new camera/lens combo is going to be expecting a certain quality level, and they won't be getting it. "

Another:
"I own a 8mm fisheye "exotic" (russian) Peleng. It's a tank (all metal). It's price is more than cheap (one buy it only for fun, usually, not for serious photography) but it does extremly sharp images on a "stupid customer" 1000D. And my Canon (oooohh) new (aaah) 18-135 is sharper as my aunt glasses."

This would explain the cold shoulder this lens has been getting over the past few weeks.

Sad.

well.. guess the 18-200mm will still be a better one for anyone looking for a affordable zoom lens !!!

go take a look at the lab shots
i must say i agree with them to the core

though i don't own it , but really the lab shots are enough

the image you see with your cursor off it belongs to the 18~135
rollover your cursor on the picture and you have the 18~55

as a self-declared canon fanboy , i'm very disappointed with them

i totally agree with you.. if you need zoom for Canon.. 18-200mm IS is the way to go.. Even 18-200mm IS is much better than 18-135...

The best in IQ using Kit Lens
- 18-55mm IS
- 18-200mm IS
- 18-135mm IS (lousiest)

Just played with my friend's 18-135. All I can say is the build quality is SOLID. The zoom smoothness is definitely L grade to me. Whether it will still be in 10 months is another question.

L Grade? Which L lens you are comparing it with? :dunno:

to be honest.. i tot the 18 - 135 is okie.. okie not L grade.. but about same as 18 - 55 kit lens i used

why not consider AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO... unless you only want canon... wahahaha...

any idea when is the 15-85 dropping in our shores?

Hi, At 18 mm, barrel distortion is minimal. CA can be corected by Post processing. It is meant for shooting barrel objects/subjects in landscape photography. New lens is preferable
over old lens when peeping through it for dust or fungus.

So far seems like pretty decent comments from dpreview users. The only thing is the steep price................

Agreed, still debating between this and 17-55mm f/2.8. Sigh.....
