Hi draken413o,

Thank you very much and glad you like what you see! I still have much to learn... especially in terms of PP. Believe it or not, I have no idea how to use photoshop... have been trying to learn but struggling to follow online tutorials :embrass: after my exams I'll definitely put in more effort in that though!

Have a nice day,
AC

Am honestly not sure if I posted this before (I don't think I did..) but I took it a long time ago with my Sony DSCW80 P&S camera when I was first starting out with photography.

The image quality is not fantastic though..

You have very good images here! wow..you'll be up there amongst the best in no time!
Keep it up and keep it coming..I sure could learn some pointers and tips from your images :)

Hi r00ki3,

Thanks very much for your kind compliments! I have a lot to learn still, but I will be glad to answer any questions you have about any of my photos! By the way, I've been following your thread quite regularly although I never commented there. You have some very solid photos yourself :)

Thanks and have a nice day,
AC

Thanks. :)

#11 is... not a photo I'm proud of at all- keystone effect was very obvious, couldn't be corrected properly etc. I don't like the composition of the photo either, I'll go reshoot someday when I have time time.

Thanks for viewing!

Haven't touched my camera in AGES. Went to the lighthouse to shoot, but I only managed one shot before it started to rain very, very heavily...

good work, for the most part, but this one is a letdown compared to the rest. keep it up, anyhow.

Hi night86mare,

Thank you for your comments :) I've sent you a PM!

thought i'd reply here, because i do like to spend more time and effort writing up my thoughts on images of people who can do a lot better (as has been shown in this thread, earlier on):

regarding the lighthouse image, i think one of my main problems is that it's a very disconcerting image (not in a good way, at that). at first glance the lighthouse just sticks out of nowhere, with little context, and little synergy with the surrounding elements - it almost seems like the author had decided that he had to get the lighthouse into the frame, and kept it upright, and all that... but didn't really put much thought into composing the picture. well, that's for first impressions.

if you examine the picture compositionally, you might find that there is a lack of balance in the picture - the bottom right is just shoved full of elements (including that bridge in the background), and the space on the left just... doesn't work well with the subject here.

i find the tones pleasing, but that's it for me. definitely not the eye that was used in #16, nor the thought that was put into #1.

my question to you is - do you like this image (along with #17)? i also fall into the trap sometimes to post images for the sake of having something to post, even till today. sometimes i wonder why no one bothers to comment on the images that fall a little short, or to share their thoughts. my only comfort is the self knowledge that it is a less-than-satisfactory image in my own mind, for learning to discern between a good image, a mediocre image and a bad image is one of the most important things to me in photography.

just a bit of suggestion. at this time round of the year the sun set quite far to the left of the light house and out of the frame. Probably have to wait for 4-6 months for the sun to set close or just behind the light house.

Hi night86mare,

Thank you for your comments- I'm very grateful to hear new perspectives rather than blind praise.

Composition-wise, I think- it is at best average. I wasn't too happy with it but thought it was decent, given that the space around the lighthouse was very, very tight to come up with the angles that I originally intended- very close to the left of the lighthouse, there was a rather large boat in dock that obscured most of the sea, so I had to shoot the lighthouse straight on. I think this led to the relatively tight crop which lost a lot of the drama of the scene as well.

I'm very glad you like the tones- it took me quite a while to get the colours to my liking :)

With regards to your question- I would say that I "don't mind" the 2 photos, this an #17, but they did not blow me away- I didn't get the "WOW, I really MUST post this" feeling. You could be very right here- sometimes I feel that I need to post something, even though I haven't been taking many good photos.

Nevertheless, I'm thankful for the C&C so I can keep improving. Sometimes, I am not to happy with my own photos but I think I should post anyway so others can pinpoint to me what they think is wrong. That helps me refine my skill as well. Sometimes, if you're your own judge too often, you get a rather warped sense of good/bad.

Thanks so much,
AC

Hi coolthought,

I think this time of the year is not a great time to shoot sunset at all- it's raining so often that there is no sunset, and for the days with no rain, the rain on previous day clears out most of the dust particles/pollution in the air such that the colours of the sunset are far from dramatic.

Maybe when the monsoon season ends, I'll look to reshoot this, at sunset :)

Thanks,
AC

I suggest you do a search in this forum for this light house. I have seen a few. The compositions really work even with the limited space you can move around on the pier.

Hi coolthought,

I actually did do a search before going. Not sure about the conditions the other shooters were faced with, but I know that I have limited room to compose for a few reasons,

1. There was a boat parked to the left of the lighthouse- maybe 10m to the left- so a lot of the sea was obscured.

2. My lens at the widest was 28mm (ff equiv), limiting my options more.

These 2 factors were compounded by the fact that it was raining and I was on private property- I am not a member of Raffles Marina, so I decided to play it safe and not try anything funny such as climbing on the benches etc- I had to convince the security guard to let me in- I wasn't going to do anything stupid to get myself kicked out unceremoniously!

Thanks for the comments though, I appreciate it very much,
AC

You definitely need a uwa there.
time for some poison to share with you.
Check out this thread for the list uwa you can get for your camera.

Hi coolthought,

I thought I would be able to find a way to not use a UWA, but it turns out that the composition options with a regular kit zoom were limited, and my skills were not good enough to overcome this limitation.

I don't own a UWA yet, am saving up but I think it will be months before I can get one due to the cost...

Thank you for your comments! :)
