Can NEX6 replace my DSLR

Why get personal? Its just my own opinion. You must be a salesman.

Opinion based on...? Everything everyone else and every review has said? Please, explain how a camera body can be "not sharp". This is usually due to the lens, but you seem to have a special NEX-6 that is somehow "not sharp". Do tell! You must be a magician!

I have a 5n with kit lens and am very satisfied with the results. No issue with sharpness.

Naaah, he has a magical NEX-6 body that is "not sharp". He is a magician that needs no lens.

Yeah, can't help but to question your definition of NEX6 'Not sharp'. If u are referring to nex 6 with 16-50 pancake is not sharp then it understandable.
But stating NEX 6 as "not sharp' definitely incorrect.

thanks ppl, have bought it last night at Click!, tonight will be playing with it.

He is a RX100 user i think. He also mentioned in RX100 thread that it owns a nex.

I dont think its personal and pretty sure he's not a salesman. I can understand if you say the lens you are using is not sharp enough but body not sharp? I really dont get it.
And, i am not hoping to cut fruits/cakes/breads with my nex6 anytime soon. That said, I have not come across any camera reviews (of anybrands) that will say their body is sharp.

If I can obtain sharp images with my nex6 and kit lens, and someone else can't, then the problem is with the image capturer (I wouldn't even call him a photographer). Never blame your tools, only your skills (or the lack of it), unless your tool is a technically defective one.

If you use A mount lens with the adapter, you might as well use a SLR. Its like a half fark expensive camera which is neither sharp nor compact.

I would also disagree with you on this as well but then again, this is a matter of personal preference. My cup of tea may not be yours. I got both the nex and DLSR. The reason i bought the nex was because its smaller and lighter (and I got myself a smaller and lighter lens to go along with it for my daily use). If I need it for special occasions/shoots, I can always mount my alpha lens which I didnt sell (cus they are mostly full-frame lens).

The adapter to me is means of using more lens and I dont think everyone with a nex will walk around mounting an adapter to use a larger lens. It would defeat the purpose of buying a smaller/compact camera.

And to answer the TS question, I would just buy the nex (though by now he has bought it). Whether or not you sell off your DLSR is up to you (if you think you wont need it or can get a good value for it, sell it. Prices will drop anyway).

Haha I did have my nex6 mount w la-ea2 w minolta 80-200g for a wedding shoot when I feel strong enough for a 2 cam setup:P

Just to share my setup and rationale :)
1. A99 w sal2470z + hvl60
2. NEX6 w min80-200g
So to cover short range group, candids w flash or no flash, and long ranged focus portraits on stage w natural ambient lightings, etc

Why nex6 and didn't I use my a77 instead, I have my nex6 setup conveniently places in a ThinkTank lens pouch attach to the belt, w the body sticks out just nice for reach, whipping in and out is easy, I am big size and nex6 sits nicely flushed to my waist, the little space saving means a lot when you have to move thru crowd quickly. Another pro about having the nex6 is the high iso advantage, But I find it hunts more than my a77, when compared. I guess In quick situations, you can react quicker w a DSLR, probably solvable when the nex6 needs more getting used to. :) the shots from nex6 are quite good actually!

Bro, you must understand that he comes from a RX100, he probably got a Nex 6 body only and shot with that, which explains the "not sharp" part ! ;)

you guys should give it a rest lah. Nickgoh6 just said that he feels that the NEX6 with the kit lens is not sharp. Frankly how sharp is sharp is subjective.

That being said, I own a NEX6 with the kit lens, I am very happy with its sharpness.

For me, the DSLR is used only if I want to achieve thin DOF. I have a 35mm f1.4 and 70-200mm f2.8.

If you own a DSLR with a kit lens, might as well shift to NEX6+kit lens. So much lighter.

Actually i think he is saying that the NEX6 Body does not have sharp edges. In that sense, he must be right. Cause as far as i know, only Rolex likes to make their watch edges sharp despite the premium.

Talking about thin DOF, you should see the images from Raskae's set-up with a 50f1.1 on a NEX.

Also, what's wrong with the kit lens for thin DOF?

NEX 5N with 18-55

I don't shoot cats. I shoot people, usually full body shots

You should show us some of your people shots and explain to us why a NEX system cannot to those shots. Never too old to learn.

Lovely and apt shot bro ! :bsmilie: ....your cat's expression like "...and why is the Nex system not capable of thin DOF ? ...hrmmm ?"

No.
It is an additional camera.
Fun to play with Nex adapters and older legacy lenses from film SLR days.

I have a nex5 only but i find it sharp enough in most cases. Guess this is a sony biased thread :D

aiya, I already posted something in another thread about FX vs DX. Don't want to get into another long argument.

Actually the basic about DOF is the smaller the subject the easier it is to get thin DOF as your subject distance is very small. Basically, with NEX I think the best you can do is the zeiss 24mm f1.8 which is around f2.7 in terms of DOF compared to FF. That is around two stops worse than FX.

That's assuming you maintain the same framing, as compared to maintaining the same distance
