Always buy the best in the market with your available budget. Just like computer/laptop analogy. Between D70s and D200, I'll choose the latter, merely for its sealing and more better-built body.
cameras r not like computers. d100 came out when pentium 3 was still around but its doing fine

computers need to constantly improve due to the increasing demand of software, the requirement on digital slr bodies r less so

D70s best of the low end
D200 worst of the top end?

Thinking of getting a D200 for a friend as a gift, could you share with me what is "D200 worst of the top end"?

Thanks

Get A D70s body with SB800 or (Metz 54MZ3 ?) + 18-200VR = D200 price

I am A 350D user, but from my point of view for a start, my humble advice would be go for the D70 kit.

With the remainder of the cash to get the following:

Sigma 70-300 APO Macro Super
Zenitar Fisheye
2x1gb cf cards
External flash with spare AA batts and charger
2 extra 3rd party batteries.
Slik pro 500 tripod

With the setup above I had enough to start learning photography.

I am still very happy with the functions because I don't normally shoot that "fast" or require 5fps kind of speed from the more superior 20D

If you feel that you might want to get the D200 in future but still indecisive, I say get a 2nd hand D70 first since you won't loose much when you sell. Keep a lookout for those selling D70 with goodies.

Hope this helps a little.

the d70s may seem outdated but it serves my needs well.

getting the d70s instead of the d200 will allow u to get a trinity lens by topping up a little.

u shd read up kenrockwell on his reasons of upgrading, maybe he can help u see ur needs better: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200.htm

almost all of the plane shots in my  gallery:thumbsup: below r made with my d70s and a borrowed 300/2.8+tc1.7 so as u can see the d70s is still a very capable camera
:what: :what:... you actually do read KRW's site... :bsmilie:

I will get the D70s first. Learn about the whole of digital photography, feel pro already then get the different world camera like D200, D2X etc. By that time, new model might be introduced :) No point buying a D200 now and onli used the function it have in the D70s lar. Hehheh.
thank you very much, i was directed to kenrockwell webpage and understood why you say get D70s first

if you need to ask a question like this, you are better off starting from scratch. Get the D70s kit and start from there.

harsh but true:what:

roti_prata... TMC is not being harsh... or at least i dont feel so... cos TMC knows that i am indeed a noob in DSLR... so his advice is to start small and slowly learn upwards...

it is like driving i suppose, learn in a honda civic... buy a 15 yo honda civic sir for one year... gain confidence then buy a bmw 330ci?

correct of not TMC?

the question is whether the D70s is good enough for YOU. Nobody knows the answer to that question except you so not much use asking that question. All you need to know is the facts/specs, what improvements are there in the D200, and this can be found ALL OVER the web.

The two main improvements in the D200 to ME is the 10MP and improved AF. But to you could be totally different if you don't print big.
i know it is a 10mp but the sensor size is about the same right? will the 10mp be grainy? and super clear at 6mp? like D70s is super clear at 6mp?

about the AF, i also know it is better... newer higher spec... but how big is the difference? that i cant really understand...

look at nikons website they have all the specs on their, basically d200 is better its whether or not u really "need" it, if you do get it, if you dont get the d70 or even d50, only you know what u want

just for reference in case your not sure http://www.nikon.com.sg
bro, i can read the specs but i need advice on the little little improvements... is D200's improvements FAR SUPERIOR than D70s? or is it some minor improvements that does make much difference? i read the D200 reloading or recharging time is faster [faster between each shoot] and the AF is very much faster.... but how fast is it? will it make be feel totally irritated with D70s?

also, read that D200 consumes more battery? true or not?

you will be surprise by the details it can capture!

actually i am not saying that D200 is lousy... sorry for the misunderstanding...

to me, i view D50 D70 D70s as entry level [so D70s is the top right?]
and i view D200 D2h D2hs D2x as pro level [so D200 is the worst right?]

in anycase all of us do know that D200 is better than D70s... just how much better and whether it will affect me... since i am new to dSLR

thanks for following my thread bro... appreciate it...

btw the way, when you say "it", are you referring to D200 or D70s?

jnet6's "it" is refering to the 10MP D200 ability to capture very fine details, close to D2X IMO.

this is what i hate about normal compact cameras... at weddings, people go "yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm seng!" at the end of the "seng" then i can focus in time for them to drink... i missed everything and worst of all, the pic is super dark.... really like to know if D200 AF is fast... and if D70s AF is fast enough also...

Hi,

Consider the best system that your budget will allow. Do not forget to factor the other accessories to your budget (flash, lenses etc). If you get good enough you will not keep on thinking of upgrading this and upgrading that, which will lead to higher cost eventually.

The D200 is a dream to use and produces amazing results. Am very satisfied with it. Very fast and effective camera. Standard of build and finish is outstanding. Of course if you have a big budget, you may want to consider the D2X (considered this but for what I do, it is overkill and too expensive for me, though very tempting indeed). D70s is very capable as well. Do a search on the www, you will get more feedback and reviews than you will have time to read....
