Can any one gove me a brief explanation as to how a DSLR excells over a normal camera

better learn from a friend or you could take up a basic DSLR course.
Otherwise you will be using auto mode all the way using your DSLR which is kind of wasting your own money.

I started off with a D550 few years back and also attending some couses which covers most of the fundamentals of photography.
Your skills will be better over time if you shoot more which will make you out grow your camera and it is time to upgrade to something better

I mean well, I'm not sure how you will take this. I am noting that you are getting some replies which do not sit well with you, I am not trying to take sides, this is my personal view.

To answer your question first, the difference between a SLR camera and a DSLR camera, as the full expansion of their abbreviations may suggest, is that the latter is a digital camera. That is the main difference, and it simply means that DSLR cameras have a lot more electronics inside, and use a sensor and processors to capture images onto digital media (usually SD or CF card these days). SLR cameras use film.

This information was something that you can, in actuality, easily get from the Internet. In general, the culture in Clubsnap is to keep everything outside of Kopitiam section quite unlike a chatroom, i.e. it isn't really a place where you waltz in, create a thread, and fire questions off the top of your head. Whether that is right or not, I do not know, it's debatable. It is an endless debate which has lasted for as long as I can remember since I first came here (as early as 2006, I think). Everyone has their own views on this point.

What is important, I think, is that firstly, some members have put in a load of effort into making very detailed write-ups catered to answering some of the questions which you have been asking. Culture or what newbies should do aside, I think you would agree with me that if you were the writer of these write-ups, and it seemed that no one was bothering to care about the effort you made and was still asking questions haphazardly, your effort would seem to have gone to waste. Naturally, I suppose those members were not looking for praises or appreciation, but that's a lot of time just gone up into smoke because people don't use the resources that they have gladly provided, right? That's something to think about.

TS, try reading thr all the stickies in the newbie forum. You will learn a lot. I have a lot of negative words to say but I hope you can take this advice so I (or other bros here) don't feel the need to.

Totally agree with what edutilos have said. Equipment choice eventually comes down to personal preference. However, before you can come to a realisation as to what your preferences are in terms of which features you like/want/need in a camera system, you need to understand the technical basics of photography which is totally spelt out in the stickies & newbie guides the others have pointed out to you.

As a fellow newbie, I've personally benefited greatly from the various stickies/write-ups kindly put up by all the more experiences guys & gals here. Do not let their effort go to waste by putting in no effort on your own to learn before turning around & blaming others for being unwilling to "teach" you. There are RIGHT questions & WRONG questions. Questions that can be answered with a simple google search eg. what is a dSLR are the WRONG questions.

This forum is a wealth of resources & personally I've found it much more useful & informative than any photography book out there could possibly hope to be. Use it in the RIGHT WAY & you'll have no need to pay $$$ for expensive photographic classes & the like. YMMV. cheers!

While TS does mention "normal" in the subject line, your post only mentions "compact", which would include big-sensor compacts. Your post didn't limit the comparison to "normal" compacts.

Anyway at my very rudimentary skill level I wouldn't want to be arguing with you or anyone else here. I'll just keep quiet and learn from everyone instead.

Isn't x100 sensor an apsc sensor that is same size as d7000 ? Whatever noise advantage should be only marginally different ?

The data that goes into a raw file isn't literally what comes off the sensor completely unchanged, but a certain amount of signal processing is done to it. I guess that makes some difference. As for marginal or not it's probably a matter of opinion.

Hi TS, after reading through the 2 threads you've started, you seemed keen on getting the Nikon D3100, but is also very scared to regret buying it later on.
No problem, this is the 'usual' Singaporean mentality
(though earlier you understand that in life you can never know the result if you never try the better

As you can see there are tons of information out there, not forgetting you will need also your own personal experiences (which is not enough for now), thus it is impossible to make a really 'informed decision' that is 'regret proof' in the span of a few days or weeks doing research. I'm sure everyone here has made some decisions which they think could be better in their journey to getting photographic equipement.

So I think enough has been said. Go get a camera and take photos! Learn along the way (you can only learn about your style when doing it), and take more photos.
Nikon D3100 is an good camera to start with, as with any basic DSLR the major manufacturers offers Sony/Pentax/Canon/Panasonic/Olympus/Samsung etc etc etc.

Though since you are considering about weight issues I still encourage you to get a Compact Camera with Manual controls and there is a lot to learn about already. (I also started from the 'electronics' route, got a more advanced compact before getting a DSLR, now still feel I'm spending too much time in this forum learning!)

Hi guys, after a long week end of all you guys encouragement, i bought a Nikon D3100 online from st701 after like comparing reliability and cost from like super alot online shops. (how come purchacing online is so much cheaper than retail sales? like $200 lower?)
Initially thought of getting a second hand one but than gave up in the end cause tio scam also donno LOL.
Err anyway thanks guys for your feedbacks and advice.
Expecting my D3100 to be delivered soon this week.
