Can 5400HS work on 7D / 5D?

I tried mounting my 5400HS on a 5D yesterday, it works! My question is, how accurate is the flash output? The first few shots I took, photos look overexposed...could be due to the exposure settings I think, not necessarily the flash.

Comments please.

Hi Vivien ... my question as well. Just met a fellow CSer yesterday, I guess without the "D", thus cannot take advantade of the ADI flash mode that does with "D" lens lor .... not sure if I got this right!

tried another ex minolta guy's one, it only works in manual mode, not even TTL.

When u say it doesn't work, do u mean that it can't fire at all? My flash was put on TTL mode, it does fire. Thus my question is really on the accuracy of the flash output. As I was in a wedding shoot yest, didn't have time to experiment if the flash can really work on 5D. Instead, I changed it to a 3600HS.

5400HS will NEVER work properly with 5D :D

vivientan from I read from the manual the flash was design for the maxuum or dynax series. It does not have ADI funtion. I read if you use it on 7D it basically fires off at full blast. Also Minolta's Wireless Remote Flash Controller is incompatible with the 7D. The only way to trigger a flash remotely is with the built-in flash.

it fired, but all the shots become 1/1 power, so when you only wanted fill in, it becomes over expose

Even using pre-flash TTL mode? :dunno: Flash power still 1/1?

If I switch it to manual TTL on 5400HS, does it make a difference? Yah, I did get a shock. Cos photos all terribly over-exposed :bsmilie:

I actually freaked out for almost an hr before the big event started, struggling with the 5D and finding the right flash exposure. My fault for having an itchy backside, to try out a virgin event shoot on digital.

yeap... tats y i said on my 1st post already, can, but manual mode only...

You can only use the 5400HS in Manual mode.

Meaning, you set the output of the flash from 1/1 to 1/32 then you set your camera into Manual mode too.

It works well if you are in an area where the light is constant (ie, inside the building) taking pictures of people.

You will get all constant exposure too. If picture slightly too dark, just click + to increase flash exposure or turn the wheels to move the exposure up or down.

It won't be useful if you are using in TTL mode.

Hmmz hihi.... am currently using a 5D... wondering if we set the 5400 flash to wireless and manual mode, (not sure if this can be done also) ..will the 5D be able to trigger it?

Thanx.. :)

I m very eager to learn that too. It would be sweet if the 5D/7D built-in wireless trigger can trigger the 5400. This way you can have a cheapo manual wireless to complement your studio set-up. Thats my idea.

Well, you could get few cheap 5400HS and use it as studio flash.. the only problem is the recycling time.. normal studio flash is recycle around 0.2-1.2 sec at full blast... with smaller flash like 5400HS generally it is aroun 5-8 sec for full blast.

Really  !!! How did you test it?? Did you trigger the 5400 with

1) Built-in flash or
2) 5600/3600HSD??

According to the flash manual, the 5400 can be used in a group with 5600.

Now confused liao....:dunno:

I triggered it with the built-in flash. Did not try using 3600/5600. I do not think it will make a difference. It seems the wireless sych in the 3600/5600 is different from earlier generations so even when I set the correct channel on the 5400 it still does not trigger.

I have since bought a used Sigma DG-500 Super, and it works very well in wireless mode with the 3600 I have. Even supports lighting ratios between diff wireless flashes! All for about the same price as a used 3600.
