I know Japan isn’t the cheapest of places to buy anything especially electronics but I would like to check out the 18-200mm VR F3.5-5.6 lens there and if the price is not too much, maybe even get one. Will be in Tokyo the next week and was wondering if you guys know how much more it’ll cost and where would a good place be to check out cameras and lens.

Thanks! :)

Visit Map camera in Shinjuku. Their tax free prices are lower than Sg.
Generally, the more expensive the item is, the greater the saving over prices in Sg.

But if you are going to spend over $1K for a lens, I suggest a nice prime or primes rather than the 18-200 VR. You'll get more value out of the primes than that zoom.

Yodobashi at various locations also give good value for money.

just came back from Tokyo last week...
Bic Camera , Yodobashi, Map ... all no stock 18-200vr....

Narita Airport has 1 piece display set...
but price is cannot buy type

hope this info helps

Please keep such discussion to consumer forum, not here :nono:

Japan surely isn't the cheapest place but its one of the place where you can get top quality camera gear at a good price [and less concern of shonky dealers]

Strolling down in the used camera shops there, you can find LIKE new lenses for fraction of Yodobashi or Sanpou price.

A friend got a brand new like AF 20-35 D and AF 80-200 D for almost 2/3 of Singapore RRP last time.

Some lenses are cheaper there, some arent... i suggest u check out the price here b4 going there... Also, different branches of the same camera shop have different promotions (eg: Shibuya's Yodobashi may have better offers than Shinjuku's), so do look around!

In the big three (Yodobashi, Sakuraya and Bic) - always look for a newbie sales person late in the month and at night. They are more likely to do you a deal (esp on big ticket items) as they want to meet their sales target.

goto MAP Camera. Get out of Shinjuku Station WEST exit. Walk towards KEIO shopping mall and cross the junction there in a westerly direction, in the direction of the metropolitan govt building. Ask around where Yodobashi camera is. MAP camera is right beside yodobashi (west).

P.S. there are 2 yodobashis, one west and one east. so don't get mixed up.

If u cannot find, walk towards where BIC camera shinjuku is located. there is an information counter there inside the sportswear section. ask the person where MAP camera is. she will give u a map to get there.

Map is the cheapest. bring ur passport along/

That is what I said a few posts ago but some people still continue to recommend the big 3.

Go to Yodobashi-Akiba beside Akihabara station. It is selling at Y88000. With 5% Tax off, it will be about Y10868

Thanks for all your suggestions, depending on my schedule, will check out as many stores as I can:)

Do these shops like Map and Bic accept credit cards?

Yes they do but I had problems at Map camera with my Stan Chart card. So bring more than one card if you have them.

Yodobaishi is reasonably priced. I've even checked out the pricing in comparison with other camera shops.. its pretty okie... u can walk around to check out prices though..

But i didn't buy lens there.. was scouting around for compact... and the compact there is really loads cheaper there than here at home... about 100 to 200 bucks cheaper!

Everyone's suggestions were spot on. For cameras, I think Shinjuku was ideal, Yodobashi and Map Camera were in the area. Yodobashi was like an electronics supermarket, lots of stuff besides cameras. MAP was solely cameras. I eventually bought a lens there (not the 18-200) and with the tax refund, it was $200 cheaper. Service was great, would highly recommend MAP Camera.

Gitzo tripods are cheaper.

Video cams are DIRT cheap but dunno hows price of the export models (english menu)

Actually MAP also sells other luxury items like watches. e.g. Rolex, Patek, etc.
