Calling all Profoto Users

Hello,

I am thinking of getting the 28" Mola Setti (silver) to use with Profoto heads. Does anyone have any experience to share? I have read rave reviews about Mola products but at almost double the price of the Profoto beauty dish, I wonder if it's really justified?

Many thanks and sorry if this discussion should have gone into a separate thread.

Cheers

Hello JV, we did a few tests using a mola setti (silver) a few weeks ago during a HUG/PRUG meeting at Shriro. Will try and dig up photos to show you.
Because of the way the reflector is shaped - you DO get very unique images with the Setti. Yes it's double the price of a profoto softlight reflector, but the Setti does allow you to use just a single light and gives you a soft yet hard look on your subject.
I can only say that it has to be seen to know what the effect is. I have a Mola Euro and I can tell you that the look is similar to a ring flash - without the weird shadows. But at the same time it gives your subjects a shiny voluminous look. images do not look flat.

Hello Tomohitogo,

Thanks for your feedback. Was at Profoto today and am understand they don't carry Mola anymore. What a bummer. I know I can get from B&H.

Anyway, am considering to get some gears for outdoor full body fashion shoot. So I have in mind the Acute B2 600 Air kit, the Profoto silver BD / Mola Setti and the Creative Lighting soft box 33" umbrella. What do you think?

Btw, how would I get notified of the next PRUG?

Cheers

Hi JV, your list looks like a good start. You can even try the Profoto Medium Silver umbrella coupled with a zoom reflector for a nice specular look in place of the creative light umbrella. With a the creativelight brolly (the one with a white diffuser over the reflective part) - i think you can only get a soft look whereas with the silver umbrella, you can get achieve specularity and some degree of softness - if you know how to diffuse the silver umbrella. :)
Just check back here for the monthly PRUGs. Alternatively you can send an email to denis_lim@shriro.com.sg to be kept informed via email bulletins.

Thanks so much for your feedback :-)

Shriro's Pamela was telling me about the Profoto D1 250/250 entry kit now on offer at only $ 2200 before 7%gst .
Sounds good for a lot of people .
From studio portrait entrants , wedding ,children photographers.
The D1 has already a built-in standard reflector and diffused glass in front so can shoot direct on.
Asking my brother-in law to get it so he can shoot our family gathering pictures.
He has a compact camera and with the pop -up flash turned away could trigger the two D1 s on slave mode.
Now the family won't bother me . . .
And the Promo , till end April 2011 , comes with a Free basic portrait lighting course !

Ordered a Mola from Shriro and was told that they will be consolidating all the orders for Molas this week .
Be it Demi , Setti or Euros , can place orders with Pamela at 6508 8127 .
The Mola prices are without speedrings , so must specify mount .
This also means that the Molas are universal and can be used on other lights as well .
Although , the Molas works best with the 360 degree spread of light by the glass domed Profotos .

for d1 users, do you use with the glass dome when using beauty dish or other reflectors? cos profoto site and other folks reco use with glass dome. but shriro said can try first without dome. want to hear experience of those with dome, how is effect without it? and is it something that you can do without? thanks

also shriro said improved glass domes coming soon

Hi, depends on the coverage you need. If u are using a big reflector or light modifier like the para, huge softbox, or magnum, then the dome will come in handy. For the beauty dish, the difference is quite minimal.

cool, thanks beachbum!

i did try it out and from initial testing i don't see the dark spot in the center that they were talking about in the forums... at the back of my mind it still nagged me though hehe

I use the Softlight Reflector with default flat dome.. feel that besides efficiency (with glass dome) results are pretty much the same.
