buying a RF

Russian Rangefinders are not too shabby as well. They just need more patience and tender loving care. I have a few copies of them in my possession and they're a pleasure to work with.
But if you want something that is reliable, cheap and with a meter, I recommend a Bessa R as it has a LTM lens mount and LTM lens are aplenty, whether it be a humble Russian one, or the highest quailty Leica.

Yup, I agree with your recomm of the Bessa-R; just got a 2nd hand one for myself a few months back..
A real pleasure to shoot, nice colours too.. ;)

Just curious, how much did you got yours for? :)

One more question, just trying my luck.. but is there anyone renting their precious RF out? Chiif... is it possible to meet up with you and learn from you more about RF? I would really really love to learn and shoot with a RF!
No problem, we can arrange and you can come down to my home/office at Tampines and we can sit and I can run through with you the difference between the Bessa cameras. :)

Hi guys,

i am thinking of getting a RF after switching to digital awhile back, which i believe film still retains that old charm.. Those memories of waiting in anticipation.. ah.. Well that aside.. I would really love to get a RF and hope that the pros here could give me some advice on mainly on which are the ones to buy.. I mean, i don't have a astronomical budget for a Leica. All i need i need is one with basic functions like metering. Thanks!

if u just want to get in RF, i can endorse getting a bessa. i got mine a few months back and have been very happy with it. the models can be a bit confusing... u just need to decide roughly what kind of lens ranges you use and that will determine which model to get. the only other decision to make is if u want aperture priority function or not.

Heheh. Nobody talk about the R2A? I'm just happy that after all this talk of R3A, R4A, 40/1.4 etc, I'm still content with getting the R2A with the 50/1.5 :) It's got no 40mm frameline, or 1X viewfinder magnification but it looks real pretty with the black, crinkle finish. :D

I think a RF is another way to exercise your eye and mind. I used to have a Bessa R and a 28/3.5. Sold it off becos the R had some problems focusing and I struggled mightily with it. In the end it got relegated to taking up space in the dry cabi. Then I bought my R2A from chiif. It was good. :)

i am thinking more towards the 35mm side.. and aperture priority is pretty important.. :)

Can share the kind of focusing prob you were facing? Is it a common prob for Bessa R?

I personally think it's tough not to be hooked on a Leica! :)

I must really warn you... once you get yourself started on this, there is no looking back.. its an addiction.. you will end up eating, drinking, sleeping leica..

be very careful what you are getting yourself into... :bsmilie:

hmm.. reminds me of smeagol/gollum... "precious... my precioussss"

robertcapa: HAHAHHAHAA.... u summed it up real good! :bsmilie:
once u get hooked, it becomes a never ending love story. digital will never hold any special appeal after this. its a sweet sweet addiction.
so yes: BE WARNED! :)

Hmm. Oops. Sorry to rain on your parade. Didn't notice u bought a Bessa R. :P The one I had could not focus to infinity. I seem to remember reading that it happens sometimes. If yours can focus to infinity, then you're all good! :)

The infinity focus problem is probably due to the focusing patch misalignment which can be solved by adjusting a few screws under the hot shoe. Well, it needs to be done by a trained technician. For any Bessas bought from me, I will do it for free if you come across misalignment problem after using a while.

For any Bessas bought from other sources, I can do it for a very small fee.

Regards,
Chiif

...er...you mean there's a probability of misalignment after using the RF? What's the failure rate? Nothing to be concerned about, I hope.

CLA will fix the problem, if it's not then try f/8 and ASA 400

i think that's why someone invented the phrase: "f/8 and be there"
;)
