Buy D40 or D40x...?

Get a D80 instead unless you intend to have another body later on. The limitation of D40 is frustrating to me at times and it is making me considering another SB800 flash by this week because of its limitation on commander mode.

Totally Agreed! Get a D80, its like the baby D200 but D40x or D40 is not even a baby D80. You save on the camera but in the end you got to get all SWM lense & its not cheap. Get a camera that is more versatile. I think for you D80 is good

D40 n D40X for me the operation is very slow, everything need to go Menu, toggle and OK button. Almost for everything such as ISO,WB,change the FLASH MODE n etc. With D80, almost everything has a shortcut. Fast operation. And plenty lens i can buy n play around.

If u have D80, u wouldn't bother about D40 anymore, and for me I wouldn't bother to get a D200 also. Hahahaha. Good for hobbyist n until certain extend, can make money out of it.

On the D40, ISO and White Balance can be set to FUNC button. Flash mode is set holding down the flash button and turning the rear dial. You haven't played around with a D40 enough yet. :nono:

Number of dials lacking, but not that much as you might think.

Haven't played enough. Yeah. Bought it only for two months n sold it away. That's why I say ALMOST EVERYTHING.

Can u set slowest shutter speed on flash???. Metering need to go to menu, I think once on the M mode, EV or flash needs to go menu again. Something like that. If u keep the camera idling mode for long, once half shutter, u dunno what WB, metering u will be using until u activate the LCD screen again. Burst mode has to go Menu again. Pardon me if i'm wrong, forgot the D40 operations. Heheheh

Aiyoh.. you wrong left right and centre :bigeyes

1. Slowest shutter speed on flash ANY camera except point and shoot can set.
2. Metering has to go menu, you correct here. (but for me, I don't change metering mode, I change exposure compensation)
3. Manual mode is no different from A, S, P mode. If you need to go to menu in P, S, A mode, then you also have to go there in manual mode, but not vice versa.
4. D40 has no burst mode at all. NONE. Neither does D80. Maybe you are talking about AEB? That one D80 has.

Opps. Burst i mean by continuous shooting.

1. Sure or not?? I dun see the menu ler for that. I mean on the body if user use SB400
3. I think in P,S,A mode u can set EV on the button near to shutter( lazy wanna check the photo, hehehehe). But on M mode, the EV button will become shift for aperture. Right?? So always confuse when wanna change EV in M mode, accidentally dial the aperture. Right??
4. Continuous shooting 2.5 fps. Right?? Have to go menu again.. Even the AF-A, S n C also menu right??

i think it really depends on what he/she is shooting, ya D40 has its limitations on auto focus, but operation wise i think its pretty decent enuff...and it can produced fantastic photos...i used to own a D40, love it so much, but has sold it after i got myself a D200 and oso to fund other stuff, but now i miss this camera i might buy it back 1 day...:)

i would go for D40 rather D40X, simply becos D40 gives mi a stop faster (min ISO 200 for D40 compare to min ISO 100 D40X) unless i really need the extra 4MP.

1. You make until I blur like cuckoo.. dunno what it all means anymore.. :bsmilie: But regarding a diff point, for SB-400, you only have manual control of the flash on the D40. I don't think other cameras have. (Because SB-400 was targeted at entry-level users). I'm not even sure if D40x has manual control of the SB-400.
3. No. You have to hold down the button and shift the dial AT THE SAME TIME. so you have compensation... but beats me why you will want to use manual compensation when you are in manual mode.
4. Correct. But I leave my camera in AF-A, continuous shooting and so far, no problem.

N.B. AF-A, Single-Servo and this pile of options is a bit complicated. ;p

Sell D40 to buy D200 and then buy back D40?

1.Get the d80 n u will know what i mean?? Hehehe
3.Cos the metering for d40 n 80 is tricky. i use manual compensation at some times in M mode. U r right for the P,S,A mode to change the EV, press the button n move the dial, but in M mode, it serves as APERTURE shift button + dial. So sometimes accidentally dialled aperture instead of EV in M mode.

So get the D80 n u will not regret. Many lens to choose from n definitely cheaper. And definitely FASTER operations.

Buddy, I already have a D2x.
I tried Sb-400 on my D2x and still no idea what in the world you mean by Sb-400 lowest shutter speed. :dunno:

I still don't understand you using manual mode, and using compensation-in manual mode you compensate by changing the ISO, shutter speed or aperture.. why do you use the compensation dial? :dunno:

You really defended D40 all the way. Your explanations makes me take out the camera and try all those you explained.

Prob because this thread ended up degenerating into technical things which he was not looking for (and don't understand, including me), eg flash lowest shutter speed :dunno:
