I sold by D40x recently to my friend, but I really really like that cam. As you said, it is limited to the type of lenses to choose from (basically only AF-S), but depending on the person, the D40/x may suit that person just fine. One of the reasons I upgraded is because of the limited lens range, but what I can says is that a D40/x with a AF-S 18-200mm VR can do a whole lot (of course you can have that as 2 lenses, i.e. 18-55 + 55-200). The question I ask myself is how far I want to take photography as a hobby, and that is why I chose to upgrade. I don't regret buying the D40x, as it helped me learn many of the basics of photography... but now I've decided to upgrade.
The suggestion to get a 2nd hand D50... or even a D70/s is also a great way to go. you can actually explore more about photography that the D40/x could not provide, e.g. bracketing. With hind-sight now, if I understood more... I wound have bought a 2nd hand D70/s first to learn... but then again... we all learn from experience...
As for manual focusing... you can do that as well in D40/x cameras. So I'm not quite sure why you say manual focusing is no no. There are times I had to just switch to full manual mode to capture a certain shot.
Anyway the dinner and dance was 480pax  I used 24 batteries. :bsmilie:
(Maybe that's why my SB-400 died?) rofl ;p
I understand your viewpoint. Let's hope newbie understands AA, TTLBL, TTL RPT functions.
Ouch.... 24 batteries... tat's quite a bit... I normally have about 8 to 12 to last (if I'm using 4 batteries only)
The VF is too small for manual. I know you can make use of the focus indicator but its not precise. And for example, you are taking out a 50mm f1.8 or f1.4 indoors with bad lighting. You will miss out moments that you could have captured with AFD AF-able lens. that alone is why i would suggest that the buyer gets something that can AF with most lens.
Manual focusing is especially difficult for individuals wearing spec. that said, i had no problem focusing with a friend's D40 but he seems to have some forward or backward focusing, maybe due to specs. need to do some diopter. if you have a film camera, it would be easier to manual but with digital, i guess its best left to auto unless you have lots of time to capture the moment. the snap and go ability will be lost and you get ppl posing for you instead of being able to capture the moment precisely. hmmz. guess i might be wrong also. I would go for at least the D70s (glad i had that as first camera) anytime due to the good features and double dials (good for M mode).
That said, whatever camera one buys, just use it to the fullest with no regrets! enjoy ur camera, be it a D40 or a D3. thats more impt. =)
Cheers,
tltan
Darn.. I should take them out of my profile.. :embrass:
Huh? The indicator is extremly precise... more so than my eyes I think.
For me.. manual focus to sharp.. then the indicator doesn't light up. I shift a millionth of a mm more then it lights up and stops lighting up. I go.. "must I be so precise?"
fast enough for AF for candids? unless you mean prefocus
i never doubted the ability of the cam. just the limitation of AF with AFD good lens that one will miss out. spend a few hundred more or same price get a second hand body like D50 wont have such problem. will make shooting easier. but of course, if stick to kit lens only, its a great buy! or the 18-200 VR also. =)
Erm. Candids? I doubt many people can manual focus fast for candids.
lol.. I wasn't even talking about candids.. I was talking about the focus indicator on a static subject in the first place. Basically I was saying using your eyes to judge focus is easier than the focus indicator, because the focus indicator is TOO precise and you are going to spend the whole day focusing.
Maybe viewfinder is a consideration to you in manual focus. It has never bothered me though, cause I hardly manual focus. :embrass:
Let me dig out the D2x and D40 and see a side by side comparison on manual focus. I'll get back here in a short while to post my results (highly stupid way of testing)
cool! i also find the indicator a big hassle to use.

Various Nikon P&S, SLR and DSLR, Panasonic P&S, Minolta P&S is also alot don't you think? ;p
OK lah.. not that obvious anymore.. ;p Can be the cheapest of each.
I miss split image focusing screen.. I once made a comment that we should not use the term focusing screen for the modern AF bodies because it's not as easy to focus with anymore.
Composition screen? ;pthen you want to call what? lol... screen with black rectangle? ;p
That's not all (24 batteries=12 SETS OF CHANGES FOR SB-400)... I had to resort to on-board flash in the end... simply no more juice for the SB-400
Attention to all gurus... pls help me choose whether to buy a d40 or d40x...? is d40x worth it...? pls pls pls...
why you buy the P5000 I cannot understand though. I hate that camera. lol.. focus so slow.. shutter release I can close my eye and count. :bsmilie:
No leh.. din buy the P5000. It was the old 5mp CP5000.
Anyway, my company's D40 arrived this morning.. Wah.. got a bit of shock because more steps to change settings.. Too used to direct access to everything... ;p
Edit: Just put in sRealav2 curve and the images are perfect!! I highly recommend using this custom curve. ;p
