Brining tripod overseas, hand carry or check in

My last tripod came back in pieces after I checked it in. When I went to buy tripod this time, I made sure it will fit in my hand carry luggage. Not easy though, it can only fit when placed diagonally and with ballhead removed.

I was in Cambodia in December. checked in my tripod. The tripod was mishandled and and alot of scratches and dent marks.I think its best to wrap it up and put in a luggage bag. Imagine i had made a special padded cover to protect it and it ends up in this state.:(
Happy Shooting:)

get those tripods that can fold into smaller size, it is more expensive but worth it in the long term.

I carried 2 onboard for my last HK trip, cos I saw an offer in HK that was too good to be missed, so I bought another tripod there. Ended up with 2 tripods and my cam bag (a Tamrac Expedition 7x; for those of you in the know, you'll know it's size) as "hand-carry" all 3 items onboard... :D

Did you managed to get a foldable tripod? If yes, please share with me the make and model. Many thanks.

Ah, you read my mind. I bot a foldable bike and definitely want to carry onto the plane. Good stuff. Need to check. I wish there is a placeholder for all these references types. Like an CS Encyclopedia (ah, i m from old school, now wikipedia... maybe CSpedia

I have tried both check-in in a luggage and handcarry on board.
Both methods works fine.

I have hand carried, packed into luggage and checked in. No problems.

Yes, It is always in a padded tripod bag. And if it is in a luggage, I will shield it with my clothes.

I have packed my Manfrotto 055CX inside my luggage and check it in separately using a padded Manfrotto tripod bag.

I always ask the check in counter to put fragile on my tripod bag and request to check in the tripod bag last:)

So,when you go overseas brining your tripod,do you hand carry it or check it in if your tripod has a tripod bag

I have a bad experience when I travelled to Europe, I check-in my tripod and when I collected it at the airport, the tripod was damaged. Luckly I bought insurance coverage and claimed it.

After the experience, I alway hand carry or place it in my luggage.

Unable to hand carry during my recent trip from vietnam back to Singapore. Was told to check in by the custom at airport.
I guess is more or less depends on the custom...and his mood ! ha

Guys, always check with the airline counter when you check in. Some airlines DO NOT allow the tripod to be hand-carried onto the plan. If they do not, at least you can pop your tripod into your luggage before you check it in. My 2 cents from personal experience. Was paranoid when i brought my new tripod overseas for the first time. :bsmilie:

You wouldn't want to be at the boarding gate for the security to tell you that you have to leave your tripod behind..:bheart:

I hand carried it on all my trips. Recently got another foldable CF tripod. Hand carry again of course. Never had any issues with the airlines.:)

you wont have to leave it behind la, all they will do is perhaps to confiscate it for the time being, and check it in with the rest of your luggage tagged. and you will still be able to collect them when you touch down...

i never had a problem checking in the tripod. (fly more than 5x already)

i also hand-carry it once and no problem at all.

but i only tried it at SG-MANILA and SG-CEBU, on budget airlines

I check in my tripod.
