Brining tripod overseas, hand carry or check in

So,when you go overseas brining your tripod,do you hand carry it or check it in if your tripod has a tripod bag

best to check if you can hand carry it, if you don't have much to handle, hand carry it, it will be safest that way.

next best alternative is to put it into your luggage, cushion it with whatever you have aside, for the most part it should be fine, but still there is a chance that something may go wrong.

checking it in a tripod bag, unless the bag is heavily padded, you are asking for it.

there was a thread a while back about someone who checked in their tripod naked, i think.. came out in pieces. i wasn't surprised, baggage handlers don't have time to handle your luggage with kid gloves and treat them like they have glass inside.

if you have to haul loads of heavy luggages, some of which weight 30-40 kg.. you bet things get hurled around sometimes.

it is not just tripods, my friend put his hard drive near the top of the clothes pile because he forgot about this, he said it sounded like r2-d2 (star wars) for 3 days then died on him, it was working perfectly fine before that.

after 2 years of travelling through heathrow airport, my other friend's luggage (hard case, samsonite) could no longer be closed properly. ;)

you can read this thread.. still got one picture..

Think it varies airlines to airlines.

I have friends taking NorthWest to Hokkaido being told to check in the tripod.

I myself hand carry (put in tripod bag, think tank bazooka - to cath lesser attention) in my recent trips to thailand and vietnam - Airlines Garuda and Jetstar, No problems at all.

Advise is to check in when taking major airlines (SQ,NW,CA etc) to avoid the hussle.

Gg states in mid dec on SQ, gg to check in my tripod :)

hmm handcarry is more safe cos the lugagge crew alway throw the bags .. even when u put fragile ... ^_^

I am lucky enough to witness how they handle our baggages before.

Basically they just throw (yes, they throw) your bag on top of one another into a cart/container like thing. When its full, they just close it and load it into the plane. So whoever's bag at the bottom will basically get crushed

My tripod, either Slik U6600 or Benro is always hand carry inside case when travelling in Asia with no problems. Since 2005, been to Shanghai on SQ, Hong Kong, Ho Chi Minh and Kuching on Tiger Airways/Jetstar, Japan on Northwest/JAL.

If taking JAL, it appears the tripod+case should not exceed 50cm and water bottle should be no bigger than 700ml type. My tripod and water bottle was measured with tape several times before boarding JAL international/domestic flights.

A quick CS search using 'brining tripod overseas' and 'how to bring tripod overseas',no relevant answers came out, most of them where which tripod to buy and all that or protecting camera gears,no such question about how to bring a tripod overseas.Maybe it's my search word

keep the search simple......... type in 1 simple word 'tripod' and you should get about 40 pages worth of threads on tripods alone and 20-30 threads on travelling with tripod

Different airlines have different requirements. I normally check mine in to save the trouble.

HCMC airport does not allow triopd to be hand carried.

It is not the airline but the airport.

My tripod was hand carried and left Singapore. While transiting in HCMC, the airport stopped me from hand carrying the tripod. Had to pay 4 - 8 USD to wrap up the tripod and check in.

I was at San francisco airport earlier this yr...
counter staff paste fragile sticker... i saw personally, the baggage handler throw my bag onto the conveyor belt...:thumbsd::thumbsd:

Never trust "FRAGILE"

i think after the latest failed terroist attack, it will be a better choice to put into your luggage and check in.. if not, there might be some delays when you try to board the plane..

Luggage company must come up with a luggage with Big "Fragile" word printed all over the luggage :bsmilie:

I checked in my tripod on my recent trip to hongkong and back. Flew Budget (Jetstar) was abit worried that it might go missing etc. But it all worked well.

yes it can be carry onboard. so far i went to few countries and they are fine.

just dump in luggage...I wont buy a tripod that cannot even survive airport luggage.

I always check in, inside my Deuter bag-pack stuffed with clothes. So far no problem.
