Powershot Pro 1 also at CP!
just now quoted S$1800 on the phone ;-)

bargain city so much cheaper leh! wah quite surprised by that....

Given that CP prices are normally higher and is GST inclusive, the $1,800 price quoted isn't actually much higher (roughly only $40) than bargaincity's ($1,759 GST inclusive).

CP is a more reputable store and more importantly you can just go there, pick one up and start clicking whereas for bargaincity you will probably still need to wait at least a few days for delivery given that it's a purely online store

True! I didn't bother to calculate before posting
I found another store at $1722 including GST today, but want to check with AP before commiting ;-)

May I know which store is that, as my friend may be interested in purchasing one?

Will let you know as soon as I buy myself ;p
dun want them to sell out before I buy right? :D

OK I'll wait for your information

But in any case, you don't have to worry about my friend competing with you because

a) He does not have enough moolah ($$$$) yet
b) Letting you buy first is a good idea as you can provide valuable feedback and perhaps a review from you :)

Anyway, I find that among the major stores, AP prices so far on average tend to be the best although I have not ventured into Chinatown & Orchard yet. Some people have reported very good pricing there

A quick summary of current prices quoted on 30/03/04 (all include GST):
Bargain City (online price) = $1759
Alan Photo phone quote = $1730
Cathay phone quote = $1800
PS phone quote = $1722 - will reveal full name once I buy ;p
US B&H webpage price approx = S$1670 plus shipping
HK price = ???
Japan price = ???

I'm pretty surprised at the very small difference between the launch price here and the US prices online... anyone have a HK or Japan price for comparison?

Wait before you buy...

The reviews in Chasseur d'Image (French) are less than stellar, if not catastrophic (for such higher end cameras)

The Pro 1 has bad results:
Noise: catastrophic! at 50 ISO noise is the same as other cameras at 400 ISO!
We like:
+ Quality of manufacture
+ 28-200 range
+ Command layout
+ Lens Sharpness
+ Orientable LCD
We don't like:
- High Noise from 200 ISO (!)
- Electric Zoom Command
- Electronic Visor
Overal: 3/5

The PowerShot S1 IS has better results:
But the S1 is more for multimedia than photo amateurs.
We like:
+ Look and manufacturing
+ Zoom range
+ IS
+ Menu Ergonomy
+ Video Mode
We don't like:
- sharpness of the lens
- 3.2Mp
- Vigneting
-NiMh battery
Overal: 4/5

wat exacatlly is Vigneting
and wat they mean by sharpness of the lens..

and e last time i check..
s1 was using AA batt... not NiMh..

Just bought S1 iS from these guys.

The freebies made my decision for me :)

thx for the link
no prob!
just let us know your complaints or compliments about e cam... esp for me...
hehe :D

I tried both cameras at MS today and if I have to get one of them, S1 IS will be the one. Pro1 simply dun cut the cake. The looks are ewww... price is too high and it doesnt really feel nice in my hands. Maybe I am thinking too much about L lens but after seeing the actual cam, I rather pay 1700+ to get an actual L lens. Heh.

S1 IS has that cute look, with rounded features and at a price of 800+ with 10X zoom and IS, whats there to complain? Thats all I can say about handling them.

It's common knowldge that with AA it's better to use niMh instead of Alkaline.
May be in France Canon provides a set of NiMh in the box?
And although they exist, there is no availability of Lithium AAs, hence you are to use niMh (and alkalines if you run out on the job)...

Vigneting is a loss of luminosity of the lense in certain conditions in the corners (looks a bit like the same effect as a bad hood)

Sharpness: is the ability of the lense+CCD to capture detail.
Without sharpness, a picture looks a bit blur.

Check Steve's digicam review pictures:
In this picture check the top left and right corners.Example

I think the S1 IS could have had a 4 or 5 Mp CCD (not the 8Mp).

oh ic..

e vignetting..
but barely noticeable unless u zoom in on e whole pic..
think 4r size wouldnt be dat noticeable...unless its veri pale bg i guess..

yah i agree..was hoping e s1 was 4mp..
was disappointing a bit dat it was still 3.2mp...
so dat's i wondering..for e e extra features i listed.. is it worth going from a70 to s1 now? or wait for 1-2 months for price drop..

being hearing about a s3 cam... is it a canon cam?

can anyone share the experience with S1 IS?

Guys it's not just focal length and pixels. Checkout the AF accuracy, speed, picture quality - sharpness, color etc. I did check steves review on S1 IS. IMO, No improvement in picture quality compared my 2 years old Pro90is.
That doesn't mean it's not good, after 2 year I expect them to deliver
noise free ISO 200. Very clean at ISO 50

S1 IS's new features that I like are MF ring, magnification for MF, AF sensor (Pro90is has no AF sensor, passive contrast detection AF). Video seems to be preety good, though I would prefer MPEG-4, saves lots of CF space.

Thumbs-Up for Canon, AA batteries, love it. BP-511, the cheapest 3rd party cost you S$29.90, a good charger S$99. AA NiMH getting cheaper and better day-by-day.

Don't know much abt FZ10. Outdoor picture seems to be preety good.

The Pro 90 IS is a monster compared to the S1 IS. The sensor is also bigger (1/1.8 vs 1/2.7), despite having less photosensors (2 vs 3). If the S1 IS can get anywhere close to the Pro 90 IS in terms of noise, I would already consider that a major improvement.

I'd rather that Canon use a less dense sensor than squeezing 4mp into a 1/2.7" sensor. Just see how noisy the FZ10 gets...

But if you're so obsessed about megapixels, Sony has a 5MP 1/2.7" sensor in the T1, that I think Canon will conveniently drop into the S1 replacement later. Don't count on the picture quality though... if you check out the T1 pictures, they all had to go through strong noise reduction in camera processing which reduces details, and gives it this 'watercolour' look. Blah.

Now, if only Canon had tried to drop the 4MP 1/1.8" sensor they use in the G3/S400 into the Pro 90 IS, that would be an amazing camera.

I bought the Pro1 yesterday at $1650 excl. GST from Parisilk in Holland V... quite shocked to find that place the cheapest about. Didn't try MS colour or John 3:16 though...

Now I got to get some time to get out there and shoot a bunch :)
the owner claimed that the distributor price is $1620, so not much room for profit hor?

Where is Alan Photo Shop located?
The cheapest i found for S1 IS is $815 incl GST in Marina Sq.

cheers
