Bossmen Dry Cabinets

5W is very frugal; compared to your ave sized fridge is drawing 150-200W of power. Guess if the gasket seals at the door are still in good condition, it can keep the moisture out for a considerable period even if the power is cut...

Yes, the thing about the seals is true...never thought about that. Moisture will be kept out, but the other problem would be the stillness of the air. I thought that was one of the predisposing factors for fungal growth.

Nevertheless, I would hope that if I ever leave home for a period of a few days or weeks, I'd be carrying my camera with me. I'm sharing the cabinet with my Dad though, and I don't know if we'll be putting any other stuff in it...stuff that we won't take on a road trip.

Hmm...I did some check up on a website regarding the weather. And over the next four days the humidity can be as high as 85% or as low as 51%. That's not really idea. If it were in the 40-50% range, I could live with that and be fairly confident my gear would be fine. But at 85% I'm really not so sure.

Hungry hippos work very well here. Too well sometimes, in fact. When they are first opened and put into a dry box they make everything really dry...30% RH. Usually I like to leave it in the open to 'age' a little before putting it into my dry box. As it loses effectiveness slightly it will eventually keep humidity at around 50% or so.

fungus doesn't grow overnight?!

Anyway it's approaching winter now weather is pretty dry but better to play safe.

It certainly doesn't grow overnight and it might actually take months to years to appear. I reckon that if the conditions are right, a few weeks is all that's necessary.

I have the bossmen cabinet for a couple of months. I have left the knob at H. With all my equipments inside (abt 3 cam and 3 lenses), the humidity is at abt 56-58%. I am now starting to wonder if it is working properly as knob is set at max liao, I cant seem to bring it down to 50-55%.

Just need some comfort from other users if my situation is normal and whether 56-58% is safe. Thank you. :)

is urs the analog version or digital version? mine is the analog version, and the hygrometer readouts from the dial is inaccurate. ended up going to Home-Fixit shop to get a digital hygrometer and put it inside the cabinet. u can get a smaller digital hygrometer from Ruby Photo.

Mine is the analog version. Looks like I have to spend some money to satisfy myself that the cabinet is working. Thanks
