Sharing some of my family must have (home-cooked) CNY dishes in the following series.



Mei Cai Kou Rou (梅菜扣肉)


This dish is one of my mom's best cooking and is a lot more complicated than the usual kou rou (steamed pork belly with preserved vegetables) out there. Due to my mom's age and health it was about time for us in the family to learn before this traditional recipe was lost forever. My first try and I thought it was quite acceptable. I changed to leaner meat and used olive oil and fruit vinegar so it was a lot less oily.

LOR MEE/BRAISED NOODLES


Lor Mee (鹵麵) or braised noodles is a dish of thick flat yellow noodles served in a sticky-gooey-starchy gravy and is totally different from the Taiwanese lor bak mee/lu rou mian (滷肉麵). One of my favorite noodles dishes, this Xiamen originated delicacy is popular locally but is less well-known compared to say fried kway teow or hokkien noodles. The thick gravy is made of corn starch, spices, eggs and sometimes certain herbs are added too. Many variety of (deep-fried) ingredients are mixed with the noodles and the usual ones are wu xiang/ngo hiong (five spices roll), fish, braised pork, fish cake, dumplings (wanton), half boiled egg and garnished with chopped coriander leaves. Vinegar, garlic and cut red chili can be added for extra kick.

This was taken in a stall run by a very friendly uncle in Blk 151 Serangoon North Ave 1. A popular stall which operates only till after lunch, the lor mee served here is definitely worth trying. The gravy was smooth and flavorful, noodles were cooked just right, well done braised pork and the crunchy yet tender deep-fried fish was a superb combination. Unlike other stalls; vinegar, cut red chili, minced garlic and coriander leaves here are left to the customers instead of pre-added.

Rendang is a spicy meat dish originated from the Minangs in West Sumatra who are famous for their Nasi Padang and is sometimes described as curry but the authentic rendang is nothing like one. Rendang uses meat (usually chicken, beef, mutton) as the main ingredient and is cooked with coconut milk and a paste of ground spices (turmeric leaves, coriander, ginger, lemon grass, garlic, shallot, chilies, galangals). Cut potatoes and deep-fried coconut flakes are usually added in my mom's version.

Tried the oldbibik rendang at jalan besar, not bad also, but I like minang house rendang better :lovegrin:

Thanks... Yup, Old Bibik's rendang is pretty ok especially for that kinda price range (and cooked by young chaps) but I find theirs a lil too 'saucy', too much gravy. Minang house's is good but super duper oily & fattening ;p
There's a Malay stall in Adam Rd FC who serves really good lontong, their rendition of (mutton) rendang is pretty close to the authentic one, haven't tried for a quite a while though...

Chng Tng/Clear Soup


Chng Tng or clear soup is a chinese dessert of sweet soup with healthful ingredients like lotus seeds, red dates, gingko nuts, barley, dried persimmons, sweet potatoes, longans and white fungus which could be served both hot and cold. It is one of the most common dessert here and could be found in almost every food centre.

Ye/Yue Lai Xiang in Bedok Corner FC is probably one of the best (well-known) chng tng stall in Singapore and has been around since the old days when the hawker centre was still by the beach. It is now run by the 3rd generation - the super chatty and friendly Mr Lim with eyebrows ala 白眉鹰王.

His chng tng is really sumptuous and rich with at least 10 or more ingredients, some (like the dried winter melon and dried persimmons) are not commonly found in other stalls. The business here is fantastic and it may take up to 40 mins just to sample this cooling dessert but it's definitely worth waiting. Personally, I like the chng tng here but I find the soup a tad too sweet compared to say Guang Heng of AMK FC or No-name chng tng in Bedok South.

Desaru


Sharing in the following series some foodie pics taken during my family short trip to Desaru last December. We booked a family suite of 2 bedrooms in Lotus Desaru, a huge resort right next to the beach. Pretty ok for the price but nothing is free, we had to pay practically for everything even a simple basketball or a board game.

Buffet breakfast

As we were there during the peak period, it was pretty messy and the service staff had a hard time clearing the left-overs. The spread was acceptable but nothing stood out.

Buffet Dinner

The local food buffet dinner was much better than the breakfast but at RM70/pax, it was not really worth eating. The selection was ok but could do better with more quality food. The Penang fried kway teow was good but our favorite was the super savory, soft and juicy sweet-dark-sauce mutton!

133 Penang Authentic? Yup, pretty good, love the spiciness :thumbsup: Have frequented them since they were still in Tai Chong, iirc they didn't have fried kway teow back then, always went for their prawn noodles.



ahh... the famous cheng tng!! yummy looking!!

Pretty famous indeed, the da-bao (take away) order is amazing, many with 10 or even 20-30 packs hence the looooong waiting time :sweat:
