Agreed. But the key issue is how come there is still people joining, encouraging it? I guess we have really missed out people who just wanted to have have fun and see how their photos would compare to others. There are really people who are satisfied with their entries appearing in papers and showing it to friends though they dun get a single cents. The experience and seeing one's work appreciated by a company and using its as advertisement is more than what money can buy. Right?

that's why organisation can still go on with their exploitation-spree. and that's why there needs to be warning.

imagine the horror of posting up an image from a competition to share with friends and family and get sued by the organiser because they have taken the exclusive rights already. this is just a simplistic scenario, legal stuff are always sticky for the layman.

and warnings should not only work within the boundaries of CS, those who know of such exploitations should spread the message to friends and family members as well, i always tell my clients and friends about rights issue when there's a chance. only then can more changes take place.

Going to page 4 , more to come , stay tuned . We will be right back after this short message from our Thread Sponsor .

The way you reply really speaks about yourself.

just an example:

a: hey ah B, you know what! i just won the first prize for a local photo competition!:)

b: fantastic!

a: it was so damn tough as there were hundreds of photogs in that competition. selections came after several rounds and after all of that, i came up top!"

b: let me see your winning pic! (looking at the pic) excellent piece of work. how much did you get for the first prize?:D

a: $250:(

b: :o

correct, so nothing wrong with 'making a big fuss' over T & C to warn people right? T & C protects organisers, and are usually out to exploit photogs. there's an unfair deal, but we cannot prevent it, so how? give out warning to unsuspecting participants lah.

i fully support this but its also a free world. dun you find it bothersome to say or read the same old stuff over and over again. i think most have already said this many many times. enough warning has been given out. maybe should just sticky one of the threads instead.

that said...organizations have the right to come up with any rules or regs, no matter how unfair it may sound to photographers. the organizations will definitely have some motive for organizing such competitions - publicity, free photos, etc. the public is free to participate or not. note that not all newbies are naive and unsuspecting, there are a number whose works would never see the light of day if not for some of these competitions.

as someone said it takes to hands to clap..

That's why it's so hard to get through to these people. We who are against unfair T&Cs are not trying to trash the competition or the competitors' dream, we just want the T&Cs changed for everyone. Most often than not, when we have posted in regards to unfair T&Cs we have been flamed by "happy join, not happy don't join". This is not the point. It has never been the point.

Let's not talk about royalties/money. Rights is about you retaining your blood and sweat. Imagine if you built a house, a very grand beautiful house. You enter it in an architectural competition and the T&Cs state the organiser will keep the house upon entering the contest. Do you still agree to enter because they said they will credit you? Or can you ask, "How about I just let you use this house for a period, but I retain all other rights to this house?"

I hope it makes sense. Please don't fight against us but with us.

In short, it is a natural trait of human beings. If nobody makes noise, everyone assumes everything is ok.

If nobody raised the issue of shooting outside the esplanade (smart aleck security guard dissallowing us to shoot), the security guard would have thought that photographing the esplanade is not allowed, as mentioned in one of the threads in kopitiam.

Eventually if we raise our concerns in a civil yet unified voice, organisations will learn to hear about it, media gets to talk about it, and slowly things will change.

That is why we should not keep quiet when things are not right.

My sentiments.

think about it...a number of participants may not even be clubsnap members, so maybe if you want to raise awareness a note to newspaper forums might be the way. not much point to keep harping and arguing in clubsnap.

you cannot force organizations to change their t&c. it is their competition. i just think you are fighting the wrong battle.

many participants don't come to CS, but many visits CS as well, so what's the problem?

if you follow the what you would describe as 'complaints' in the competition threads, these are mostly followed up with enquiries made directly to the organisers, and at times T & Cs do change because of such enquiries.

if you are not interested, maybe you should just stop arguing also.

Come on.

A competition is one of the best ways of the organisers to get the pictures they need.

So please stop commenting on every competitions lousy rules and regulations.

If you think your work is that great, simple. Dont take part. Stop complaining and outright slam every competition. ;(
