Beware of becoming a Direct Subscriber of Spore Press Holdings for your newspapers

It is a habit. Collect paper, go to toilet. Flip from the back from section 2 to 1. Read anything interesting or informative? I am sure many are doing the same. Haha

I see. For me I read news and stuff off my hp. Much more informative and educational than ST :D

Giving a whole new meaning to sh**ty news :bsmilie:
Nowadays I just bring my 7" tablet to toilet and use flipboard. Much more convenient, aside from the weight issue

There is an undetected downside to constant supply of newspapers on a daily basis. You tend to over indulge and spend too much time reading them completely, instead of selective reading only. Perhaps in a sense to get your money's worth.

One of the main problems with our newspapers here is that they keep repeating the same thing over a few pages. You read on front page, then you are asked to go to page 8. There they repeated what was reported earlier. Nothing much to write?

If you see a photograph appearing in ST, the same exact one also appears on Today. Even same photographer takes more than 1 shot right? All photographs need 1 person the clear?

Sad when you find reports on minor road accidents or trivial incidents those 'ah soh' chit chat at the market. Maybe these are what readers want?

But I love the thick stacks of papers. Useful for cooking, laying on the car booth for marketing, etc. most will go to the neighborhood maid to sell to the karanguni man. Old folks also have difficulties reading from an 8 inches screen. That is why I made so many typo errors on my little iPhone.

now they are hanging up a surface RT as a carrot..

Actually no point with Surface RT. The only good thing it comes with office. Other than that I think tablet might be more useful.

I stop subscribing to ST when I realized that it makes one stupid -

It's editorial pages analysis basically wants you to accept their simplistic one sided argument

Their feature editors rants about inconsequential subjects , eg Sumiko Tan

it over covers the trivial subjects and does not cover well the important ones - see extensive coverage of Hougang Town Council saga vs the skimpiness of NSA spying

It synchronizes major explanation on major issues - eg - we need foreign talent to maintain economic growth but does not put different and balance perspective. Does Switzerland and HK government, just to name a few do the same thing?

it's statistics is not accurate, this one no need give example, as it is like a daily affair

It is filled with advertisement to make you a consumer of things you do not want to get approval from people who don't care eg - condos and cars

I am not against capitalist, free market, democracy, opinionated coverage , but after so many years I have to ranked ST at this level

Independent
New York Times
Economist
South China morning post

Borneo Times
.
Mumbai Times
.
Strait Times
.
The Pyongyang Times
.
The New paper

My 90 cents worth above :)

Lol.. while I tend to agree with your assessment, we don't need to be so serious in the toilet :bsmilie:
life is stressful enough as it is :)

By encouraging direct subscription from SPH, they're killing neighborhood news stands and dispatch agencies, with middleman costs saved and fattening their profit margin.

Why is life stressful now?

It wasn't like that in the 90s.

And if 2013 is stressful, how do you feel 2030 will be like ?

I am now using more of my camera taking pictures Of Singapore people, life and iconic places, because in 2030 We won't be able to differentiate Singapore from Shanghai, or worst still - Manila or even Mumbai

If not wrong, the dispatch or the delivery are still done by same person. Just now the payment made directly to SPH instead of to the delivery personnel.

waht? you guys don't read bbc or cnn??? so many stuff to read, so enjoyable....from news, entertainment, science, health, sport and so much more.....seriously....ST ?????

Who wants to be brainwashed by British and American propaganda mouthpieces?

I read this instead: :bsmilie:

there is absolutely no need for us to criticize the ST as our press freedom rating is equivalent to that of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Similarly, if you have zero expectations you will not be disappointed. I used to be incredulous when I read Sumiko Tan's articles. Now I think it is actually incredible and a wonder for her articles to be published in any paper. I think she bears the standard for Straits Times and her articles are the epitome of ST journalism. Slowly you will come to appreciate them and her articles are always accompanied by the most excellent drawings. Wonderful job!

i cannot live without ST; what will my dogs piss on? :dunno:

Well said bro !

The shitty times can reposition itself -

We might not fulfilled your knowledge for truth but we can serve your pet's needs, daily.

i have a query in mind for a long time. Is the paper quality similar between "high end" area vs the "hdb" estate?

The paper in my area just stink and coated with toxic black powder.
Even the free "Today" uses better quality paper.

depends on who the delivery man is. if you get the one who also delivers charcoal in the afternoon and fertilizer in the evening, then you need to change the supplier :bsmilie:

So happen I was also recently 'renewing' this service. I have newspaper delivered almost like donkey years, I almost can't live without one as early as 6 am.

My previous vendor collect every 4-6 months! I wonder what he survives on. According to SPH, with the switch, there is no loss of income to the vendor. I still pay $29 per month. I guess the extra goes to the delivery service.

That is not exactly true. My parents used to do newspaper delivery. When I was small I used to help out on saturdays/sundays. Previously, if you subscribed to vendors, the vendors "own" the subscriptions. They can RESELL the subscriptions to other vendors if they decide to retire but only as an entire BLOCK. I think income wise is the same. In that case, the vendors has extra incentives to provide good service to keep the subscriptions.

You can temporarily stop for even 1 day. If you have missing papers, you can call on the day itself and we will try to redeliver again in the morning since we live around the area.

I see the service standards has dropped since my days :)

How do you know it's toxic? Newspapers use soya based inks.

Whiter means more bleaching. Not necessarily better. You know more chemicals means more waste byproducts. You can bet there residues on it which will transfer on contact.
