Well if there are problems, he will probably be too busy to answer my questions, and I will be a little intimidated to bug him if the issue is not serious enough...there is probably a difference of more than 20 job levels between us.

To Keito and ckiang,

Thanks for your "encouragement".;)

I have sent an email to the seller asking for more information, such as how long has he owned the camera, how many shots has he taken, any defects, scratches, dents, dust on CCD, clarification on the accessories included, the model of the 55mm lens and the Nikon flash included, as well as his reason for selling.

On top of that, I asked an el-cheapo question: would he accept a 4-month instalment payment of $800 each.:p

To push it even further, I have asked if he would allow me to try the camera with my own lenses with no obligation.

Am I too much? Or do you have any suggestions on things that I should find out about?

- Roy

Sounds pretty much standard (except for the installments of coz). The flash is likely to be either SB28DX, SB50DX or SB80DX. I'd hazard a guess that it's the 28DX. The 55mm sounds like one of Nikon's earlier macro lenses, probably AI-S though I might be wrong.

Good to "borrow" and try with your lenses as well as check the conditions, CCD dust, dead pixels, etc.

3D Color Matrix Metering vs 3D Matrix Metering
CAM 900 - CAM 1300 AF module
40 Frames Buffer vs 6 Frames Buffer
Ability to shoot native BW (D100 has no such option)
ISO120 vs D100's ISO200

These are few reasons why D1x is better.

But hang on... the D100 isnt a BAD camera altogether. It's entry-level camera with automatic features (Mtering, AF, built-in fill flash, etcc) and yet allows the user full manual control. The menu and navigation system is very logical and user-friendly and its really a joy to use one.

I guess if the price difference of $1000 can go to better use (in terms of lens, etc) then why not?

Unless you really need the features offered by the D1x over the D100 then perhaps the $1000 is insignificant.

Also, look out for warranty. Can you purcahse extended warranty to protect your camera?

My 2cts worth.

I understand that there is no debate when it comes to a technical comparison between D1x and D100.

If I am starting from scratch in building an SLR system I would also not consider the D1x.

My struggle is a result of owning MF AI lenses that I am not willing to let go.

Thanks for your feedback!

Roy

I know my wife knows that I want the D1x, I know she knows that CS knows that I want the D1x, I know she knows that I know CS want me to have the D1x, I know she knows that I am asking for support from CD to own the D1x.....

Aiya, obviously u are keen on D1X. Either get it or save a while more for it. No point getting the D100 and after spending the money still think about the D1X.

By the way I got the reply from the seller already.

18-month old, 2000+ shots, no dents or scratches, can test it out at his place or office, no installment (sigh...), no flash, but include one Nikkor zoom (will confirm model later).

Reason for selling: buying Kodak DCS Pro 14!

Brand new D1x costs ~US$4120 (after Nikon rebate).

So, still torn between 2 choices.

1. 2nd hand D1x at $3200, and use exisiting 24~50 AF and 80-200 MF AI.

2. New D100 at US$2000, new 80-200 f2.8 at US$1000, and exisiting 24~50 AF.

maybe D100 price will drop to $1.5k to match Eos-10D ;p

Roy,
Don't buy now...let's wait after PMA.

Is US$3200 cheap? That's quite lot of money...if u don't buy any DSLR, u can do lots of things with it. At least 3 Nikkor AFS lenses, from 17mm~200mm, maybe another 300mm AFS if u buy 2nd hand.

Of course, if the zoom offered together with the D1x is a 80-200mm f2.8, then grab it! ;)

Now advice towards the other direction starts to creep in.

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

Yes, $3200 is a lot of money. That's why I requested for installment but the seller rejected.:(

Wait and see is always an option.

As for you last idea, I doulbt if a person owning the 80-200 f2.8 and moving from D1x to DCS Pro 14n will likely let go of the 80-200...

- Roy

I'd still recommend the D1x if you have the budget for it.

CK

Ask the VP guy to throw in his AFS 80-200/2.8. He is rich and can afford the new AFS VR 70-200/2.8G (and I'm quite sure he wants it), so it's ok to let him lose a little money. :D

Haha. I have an 80-200 to sell too!

Erm, D1x, faster interface, I seriously wouldn't dismiss this. The D100 can be crippling if you need to work fast.

Battery life on the D100 is a lot better though.

Some of Pain's figures are a bit messed up as well... the D1x has a minimum EI of 125 and not 120 for example, and it has a 9 frame buffer, expandable to 18 frames, not a 40 frame buffer.

Thanks for all your feedback!

I will arrange for a test shoot with the seller, and keep you guys posted on my progress.:)

Roy, rumors say there might be a D2x with 7.xMP using Faveon chips. So...D1x price might drop further if the D2x isn't very expensive, just like how the price of D1 drops with the intro of D1x.

Hi Kho King,

Do you have the links to the rumours?

I saw a few threads in dpreview but did not get any more solid information.

Went to Foveon website and did not find any mention of the new sensor. Only the current 3.3Mpixel one used in Sigma SD9. Maybe it is business secret between Foveon and Nikon.

Also, Nikon did not announce any new DSLR at PMA.

- Roy

Hi Roy,
I don't have any other more sources than u. PMA hasn't arrive yet...just a few days wait and u will find out the answer. If no new DSLR from Nikon, then price of D1x might stay there well. However, if there are new DSLR accompany D100 and D1x, then price of D100 and D1x will sure drop. So...just wait till next week. Be patient... ;)

Have a nice weekend! :)

Hi Kho King,

Appears that a few manufacturers have already announced their new products for PMA.

http://www.dpreview.com/articles/pma2003/

That's why I said Nikon did not announce any new DSLRs for PMA. Anyway, they can always choose to keep it secret first until the show itself starts.

I am keeping my fingers crossed. The thing is, if there is a D2x annoucement from Nikon at PMA, it will give me some bargaining power to lower the price for the second hand D1x. It is not like I am going to go for the new camera which will most likely be beyond my financial capabilities. Even D1x now is kind of a stretch...:embrass:

I guess everyone is waiting for PMA outcome. The D1x ad was placed 2 weeks ago and still there. Today saw another ad for D60 at US$1300. I bet you this person is moving over to EOS10D.

Have a good weekend also, whatever's left of it.

Thanks!

Roy

So here's taken from Nikon Japan's website. No D2x from Nikon for PMA 2003.

http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/events/pma2003/pma03product.htm

The Canon D10 at US$1500 will really exert some pressure on Nikon. Maybe they will drop the price of D100 to conter that.

Tomorrow I will be test driving the second hand D1x. New price now is US$3000 without any additional lens or flash. 2 batteries included.
