Are you able to comment in Nikon DSLR system, which lens could be the best start lens?

18-70 or 18-135 or 18-200mm?
A prime lens, 50, 85, 105mm?
Or top zoom lens like 17-55mm/2.8?

50 mm 1.8

then figure out if you like to take two steps back or forward

then can decide to buy a wide or tele lens later:)

makes good sense, you'll want to keep this whichever way u go as well

yup, i agree! the 50 prime is the most versatile lens. allows you to shoot in all sorts of situations!

18-70

Agreed with the rest up there, 50 f1.8, best starter lens.

hi sister,
as you did not tell me your meaning of "best start lens", i say go for the 18-200mm;

cover a good range; a 1 lans for travel, buy 1 time only (maybe),
and you don't have to know what you are missing....

why not 18-70 AND 50f1.8?

a new 50f1.8 would set u back by ~$170, good value!

As many have said 50/1.8 is a good startup Lens. But my Nikon (switched from Minolta) startup Lens is AFS 18-200VR. If you are new to DSLR then 50/1.8 is your best startup Lens but if you have past experience on photography then 18-200 is better.

Bought 18-200VR with my D40.

The next lens I want to buy is Nikon 12-24 if budget allows or Sigma 10-20.

I feel a 'starter' lens should be something cheap but yet versatile. I would have chosen the 18-55mm as a starter lens but based on what's stated in your list, I'd choose the 18-70mm.

I believe beginners in photography should start out in modest equipment as the hobby may be a passing fad which does not justify purchasing pro-grade equipment.

2nd the 18-200vr. It gives an all round lens for most ocassions. From there, you may then decide on specialised lens.

i love my 18-135 d80 kit lens :)

cheap and versatile

For starting out in Digital SLR, I would not start with the primes mentioned unless you want to specialise in portraits. A 50mm on DSLR will give you a very tight shot as it is. If you really want a prime to start out with, go for a 24, 28 or 35mm. Good for walkabouts.

Otherwise, the kit lens that comes with whichever DSLR you get would suffice. If you have the cash, then sure, get the 18-200mm VR.

A zoom lens is more suitable for starter lens be it 18-70mm 18-135mm or 18-200mm. Just get a used one from B&S to try out and find out which focal length is the most used in your photography before u proceed to buy better lens for upgrade like 70-200mm f2.8. You will not suffer much losses for buying a used lens to try out. A prime like 50mm will take more than 2 steps forward or backward to frame your pic. And you will also fail see what you can captured at 18mm or 200mm range.

18-70, then upgrade to 17-55 and add in a 50mm + 70-200mm in future

but that combo cost 5k

Any comments on 3rd party lens? It seems all the focus is in Nikon "org" lens. Does it mean the 3rd party lens is not suitable for starters?

thats becos none of the 3rd party lens can match the performance/cost against nikkor kit lens 18-55/18-70/18-135...

One of the few occasions where 3rd party lenses can do someting close to that seems to be the 70-300 (often the next step after getting the 18-70). The Sigma lens is a worthy contender!
