Nikon provided an ED glass in the 18-55mm II because there's less elements and groups (7/5), and they need to add an ED glass to reduce flaring. But for the new 18-55mm VR, they added more elements and groups (11/8) to correct flaring, hence no need for an additional ED glass. Don't know how true is that.

AFAIK, ED glass is just to reduce chromatic aberration (colour fringing). For coma and spherical aberration, you can get by with aspherical optics or use more elements for correction, ED glass doesn't help. Sometimes aspherical optics may cause even more flaring if not designed properly.

Oh, then do you find the 18-55mm VR having more colour fringing than the 18-55mm II? I think the 18-55mm VR's colour fringing is not big a problem, except at some focal lengths. But flaring quite bad. :dunno:

No I don't quite notice the fringing, so it doesn't bother me. ;p Does it flare that much? :dunno:

Well, I haven't quite encounter pictures that has very bad flaring. But that's what reviews said. :bsmilie:

don't shoot at wide on the 18-55mm vr once you see the flare in the VF.
increase to 30mm to reduce flare like stray lighting from lamp post.

i tried the 18-55 VR once without filter.gotta say its very sharp at 3.5 18mm compared to tamron 17mm 2.8
gettin the 18-55 VR soon.

I have a cheap Hoya UV filter. Heard that cheap UV filters degrade photo quality, but I tried taking photos with and without filter, don't see any much of a difference. Only difference is photos appear warmer with the filter. Which is confirmed when I placed the filter on a white surface. The glass is a little yellowish.

So does UV filters really degrade photo quality?

Try shooting a scene with some bright light source (eg streetlamps) shining into the lens. ;p

But all these are lenses for APS DSLRs. What about kit lenses for FF DSLRs like the D3 and D700?

Still need to ask meh? 24-70/2.8 is THE one.

D3 and D700 don't have lens that are bundled together in the same box.
So i guess FF don't have any kit lens.. Yet..

The D700 is not sold as a kit here but in the States, it's available as a kit with the 24-120mm VR lens. Read that that's not a very good lens but quite tempting as an all-in-one lens.

D300 also got kit ? Where can I find it in Singapore? How much does it cost?

I think those kits are bundled by the retailer itself. You can even find kits with 3rd party lenses. ;p

18-55 VR for low light, hand hold shot

iso 200 with slower shutter speed is good

guess i need to update this poll to include the new 18-105 vr..
