i got no problem with my 18-55mmII but i perfer using 55-200mm more.. i like the close up on face more when having portrait or kidz shooting...

btw the rest never try before... if to choose i think 18-135mm is best for me... :)

Sharpness can be adjusted in-cam, shoot at F8 but anything with plastic lens mount = :nono: for me.

only up to a certain extent.

Best kit lens is the 18-200. but that kit option was never available in SG.

Why plastic mount cannot?
Isn't it the same?

Well, was using a 28-200 in the past with plastic mount, it can't even survive a drop less than 1m. Mount cracked, quoted at least $50 to replace and 1 week waiting time.

I have both the 18-200mm & 18-70mm.

I still prefer the 18-70mm as it's better.

It would seem that there are some shops selling the D300 package which include the 18-200 VR (correct me if I am wrong).

Worst Lens 18-135mm - No VR. Lack focus scale. A lot of distortion and color fringing. Too expensive for this kind of performance.
Best Lens 18-55mmII - very affordable, sharp and perfect for general photos. No need VR at this kind of range.

IMO, the VR copy of the 18-55 seems sharper than the II even though there's no ED glass.

I find the build of the 18-70mm the best. The 18-135mm is great for most walkabout trips and photography. Its a top class kit lens in a sense, with a hood and the extra reach.

The 18-55mm lenses are great, the 18-55mm II i used before is so light without VR handholding it and the camera is easy for low light photography (not really low light but yeah slower shutter speeds) The quality is good too.

For me its the 18-135.

Many, many years ago (when most folks here were shooting with a water pistol instead of a DSLR), Nikon used to bundle a 50mm f1.4 together with their SLRs. Nikon should continue that tradition.

I thought it was f/1.8?

I really do not think the IQ will be that markedly different to make a jump from one kit lens to the other

the extra reach be nice for a walk abt lens too. 18-55 is really too short for a length. if it doesnt works out i can sell it off the 18-70 :P

Another problem with the 18-135 is that it does not have the focus distance scale thinggy.

i'm not sure how many people actually use it though.

Very useful for guys shooting IR. For those who use screw in filters and for cameras wherein the focus were not adjusted after conversion.
