18-70. ED, IF and most importantly--- Metal mount! VR is redunctant for anything less than this range.

no idea about the other lenses cos i only have the 18-70. and it rocks!!! performance exceeds its label as a kit lens.

I still like my 18-55 I that came with my D50....though its been replaced by the 18-200 now.

Not really. Some photographers cannot do panning well - VR will help them here. But for non moving subjects I have to agree.

sure or not? hmm i like 18-55 ed !!

wouldn't these votes probably be skewed towards which of the kit lens that people actually own? unless of course you have tried all the lens amongst the choices I don't see how anyone can vote fairly without bias.. :dunno:

just sharing a thought, coz I think if the TS really wants to find out which of these kit lens is so called the 'best', a poll here wouldn't give him the answer..

i have used the 18-55, 18-70 & 18-135 quite thoroughly before..

the 18-135 & 18-55 do give image quality that is pretty much similar to 18-70 i.e. contrasty, sharp and nice colour but remember:

18-70 is a faster lens at f3.5-4.5 while the other 2 are f3.5-5.6. In addition, the build of 18-70 is really solid compared to the other 2.. 18-70 also feels much more balance & gives more confidence (very important to me)..

one more important thing abt the 18-70 is that it doesnt have a rotating front, so u can use the polarizer with ease. but the 18-55 front rotates and makes it very difficult to use polarizer.. The non rotating front is a very very very major plus.

worse is the 18-135. best is the 18-70, Build and speed and sharpness is just nice.

hmmm, 18-135 the worse? why do u say so? :dunno:
i haven tested the rest, but for me, i bought 18-70 as a walkaround lens.

lol...thats just my opinion lah. sure or not you decide lor. :bsmilie:

lol so much hype abt 18-70 i should try it someday. no nikon friends. all canon users :(

I concur. I am bring this lens for my travel. Plus my Tokina12-24. This is more than what I need. Most probably, more than 95% of the pictures will be taken with this kit lens. I have used it for more than 3years already. And, by the way, this kit lens is my one and only AF-S lens.

why didnt you go with canon as well?

i made up my mind on nikon long time ago when i realised that canon users are not that newbie-friendly to entry lvl cams.
my friends use nikon so i also follow the same especiallly when can swap lens sometimes to use or try out.
nikon entry bodies are cheaper than canon bodies.
nikon lens is also cheaper than canon lens and have more variety.

btw i'm also using the 18-70mm as my primary lens over the 18-55mm ED-II.
for this price to have dust and waterproof rubber sealing mount is something very seldom in the basic kit lens line up of nikon.

It seems that the "Best" kit lens would be the 18-70mm.
While "Worst" should be the 18-135mm.
Just want to know what you guys think, and why?

How come don't have the 18-200? I thought it was bundled with a D80 as a kit in one of the recent shows?

It can be bundled if the merchandiser does that, but the kit per se is the 18-135.

I've used both the 18-70 and the 18-135, and I still find the 18-70 better. Colors are more vibrant, and edges are sharp. Of course you lose the range, but I'd take the 18-70 over the 18-135 anytime.

Best in terms of IQ ?

Well my 18-200 VR certainly seems to confer the best flexibility in terms of reach.
but the IQ and distortion loses out with my 18-135
I suppose the smaller zoom ratio ones might have better IQ as well

this of course will be the case. but hopefully what ppl say or post into the thread may help others understand why ppl like other lenses. say smth like:

"i like 18-70 because there is a rubber seal for the mount and the mount is metal - the build just feels better."

or

" i like the 18-55 because it is really light and compact and delivers sharp photos above f5.6. i always shoot smaller apertures so this is enough for me. plus its cheaper than the rest."

er.. the statements above in no way represent a definitive evaluation of any lens so take everything with a pince of salt. :bsmilie:

Should be 18-70. Fastest lens out of all kit lenses.

Hi everyone,

Just join the club. I got 18-200 vr and 18-70 both. I like the 18-200 for travel light but its seems that when used in 200mm the sharpness will reduce a lot...

Like the 18-70, the best quality lens it its range with affordable price.

Cheers
