Best Lens for the Zoo?? ( specifically the Singapore Zoo )

I am planning a visit to the zoo soon so I am curious what you would recommend for a visit to the Singapore Zoo? My initial consideration is the 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM. Is that long enough for some of the enclosures?

Why go to Zoo to take photos of animals? I thot they are pretty static, either yawning or sleeping most of the time. Any lens will do. They won't and can't run away. :)

Wait long enough.... and they'll do something....

My last trip to the zoo.... spent all my 3hrs at the White Tiger enclosure

Wah, you're the type that can spend hours in a hide, waiting for the right shot. Or go fishing.

So did you get the shot you wanted in the end?

It will be good to have a really long telephoto for headshot

I done before with sigma 70-300
Although need to down to f8, I got good results
My friend who using his 70-200 f2.8 L has less satisfied results. He must deal with the weight of lens and the lens itself mostly not long enough :p

After so many visit to the Singapore zoological garden, (Singapore Zoo is a totally different location) I find the 100-400 most versatile. I had used 400 f5.6L which I find lacks the flexibility for zoo animals. Also have used 700-200f2.8IS and 500mm for real closeup shots. Best is still the 100-400L.

Sample of what a 500mm can gives you in the Zoo. Isolate the white rhino from the surrounding to give a more natural feel. Till I have a chance ti go to Africa to get the real wild Rhinos.

Nice Giraffe there, may I ask the pictures were taken by handheld? I felt that while Zoom Lens, handheld is quite hard to capture sharp images. Or maybe your setting got it tight. Can share?

Increase your shutter speed to improve sharpness. 1/1000 if u really have shaky hands

200mm also not enough on a crop body for the Zoo trip? Hmm... Maybe thinking of renting a extender 2X for my 70-200mm f2.8. Have plan of getting 1 extender too in future as will be getting FF body so that I won't be feeling that the distance is lost when changing the body. Also can have the chance to test and see the difference in IQ.

Anybody here recommend any good shop to rent the extender and at what price?
