Going to Beijing bro? There are a lot of stuff to shoot there. The Hutong like Ed mentioned is great.
Becareful when at the food street in Wangfujin area. Tons of pickpockets. And they do attack you if you stop them from pickpocketing others.

Hello, ??? You guys must have just been there a week or 2 ago during the People's Congress when security is super high? then its just too bad
I've shot at Tiananmen Sqare many times .... outside of sensitive political events and dates, even WITHOUT a camera there are many many vendors with digital cameras and portable printers who will be more than happy to shoot your portraits and print on the spot 4 pieces of 4R for 20-30rmb
Another area is south-east corner of Tiananmen where the old Beijing Train Station used to operate. Its a beautiful building and a museum now and that corner got alot of bicycle and pedestrian activities ... from south east as you walk towards south west corner got plenty of touts, food vendors , mobile photography and print jobs and all sorts of stuff
At night after everyone in bed , take a cab over to the new Beijing Railway Station ..... it opens all night long for the long distance trains coming in and leaving Beijing .... lots of street action there but have to kick up the ISO and watch your things as alot of strange characters are there .... there are Gong An too but just too many people there to police properly ... stay light and dont bring too much cash with you
Jade Market at around 4pm is beautiful with a clear setting sun
Use your common sense and you will be OK
See any fights or drunks or arguments .... just dont kay poh and walk away
I would not recommend the railway station if you are not a "hardened" character and can take care of yourself. Especially at night and alone.

give us the hotel name ..... 3 days before departure is more than enough time to zoom you in on the action

there are FOUR Beijing train stations .... Beijing Nan (South) station, Beijing Xi (West) Station , Beijing Dong (East) station AND BEIJING STATION (Beijing Zhan)
the Grand Old Lady is the BEIJING STATION ..... just take a subway or cab to Beijing Zhan (Beijing Station)
by subway take Line 2 and get off at Beijing Zhan .... before or after this station (depending on what direction you are travelling) you can get off and shoot around QianMen (south end of Tiananmen square ) or Chongwenmen areas (Chongwenmen is very local residential area developed about 15 years back at beginning of the boom and VERY VERY local .... New World department store is there for a spot of cheap shopping to keep the wife happy while you shoot ..... and street action is very good if you want to catch regular Beijing people )
Beijing Zhan is HUGE 250,000 sq meters .... constructed in the grand old Soviet design and built in 1959 in less than a year with little heavy machinery or technology but mostly with bare hands .... so you can imagine what a monumental human effort it was at that time
