Before turning off your DSLR, you leave it on which setting?

hey its perfectly OK if you do these things to your cam/lens before turning it off...... we all follow some personal habits and rituals .......... so dont get offended fellas

Lens on or Lens off when in dry cab... cam facing up or down , battery in or battery out, open or close apature blades when not in use etc etc etc ..... these are all personal rituals and practices....

My encounter:

1) Cannot change lens in out door.:bigeyes:
2) Dont bring camera during holiday worry knock here and there

My advise is dont tell people you are using DSLR.

if those shooting with very old school shooting full manual mechanical camera that I can understand, usually will set at f5.6, 1/60s, ASA 100.

but, this type of camera don't have on off switch.......

My mentor (long long ago) would ask us to switch to bulb mode for the minolta xg-1

Said that the spring inside will last longer as not always compressed.

But I don't think that's how cameras nowadays work.

Just leave it at P mode lor? P is stand for parking right? Hahaha.

I cannot leave my camera upside down. Not reverse gear.

Or leave it at full auto mode lah. Then can take pictures of the girl next door.

Ok if you leave it on AF mode on your lens and you turn the lens it will be very stiff. If you leave it on MF mode on your lens and when you turn you can turn smoothly. So i'm trying to say always leave MF mode on your lens when you off in case when your lens knock onto something or you turn by accident.

Did you mix up the zoom ring with the focusing ring? zoom ring shouldn't be smoother just cos you switch to MF. And haha i off it at whatever setting it was on when i last use it

It makes no difference to me. The Oly lenses I own can't MF without power from the camera, so the ring is perfectly moveable on or off.

Mirror lockup and 2-sec delay. I always tend to overlook when alternating on and off tripod. Unfortunately there's no single button for a customized function to enable/disable at will. A pain to navigate the menus. Not just limited to when turning off the camera tho.

Well... On Sony, if you're in PASM where it will remember these settings, you press "drive" then set to off. Takes about 3 secs or less.

I think there should come out with a custom function button. Pressing it will toggle between off -> function 1 -> function 2 -> function 3. Every in-menu option in the camera can be program into each function. So you can customize, say one for tripod, one for long exposure, one for bracketing, etc. It would take <1 sec to get the desired settings. It will be a killer feature for me.

I have these on my control dial as user-set memory registers. You can fully customize a complete set of settings including ISO, aperture, etc etc etc and assign them to a memory register.

For me, if I was using M, then I leave it at M. If I was using A, then I leave it at A. If I was using S, then I leave it at S. If I was using........

But that's not a situation where you just have put your camera into a 'resting mode'. I like the idea somebody mentioned about the P mode as Parking Mode - would be quite safe for quick snaps as well

This is largely for just in case moments when you are still outside, and something interesting pops up. Its for ease to take a snap actually. Sorry didn't elaborate initially.

Aperture priority, f2.8.

ISO depends on the light condition. Either 200 for daytime or at night I may push up to 800 and open up aperture to f1.8.

yes, if for long term storage, it is recommended to fire the shutter and don't rewind, so the mirror is up, and less tension for the springs.

Oh higher end models there are dedicated controls/switch/dial to do it. On my Nikon all I need to do is to turn a dial. ~1 second.

Same thing on higher end models from all brands. My Nikon has user banks, were almost all (95%) settings are saved into banks, and you can recall them instantly. These saved settings can even be which memory card slot to use for what and RAW and JPEG size settings. There is also "My menu" where you can set specific settings you use the most.

I am sure higher end models in Canon line-up have these things too. Just take a look at 7D models and up.
