I always follow these set of procedures when I edit an image in Photoshop:

  1. Adjust all global modifiers to make the overall image look right
  2. Once all global modifications are done to your liking, scrutinize on your image and identify areas that needed detailed adjustments
  3. List down or mark out all those areas that needed adjustments
  4. Decide your workflow
  5. Start your workflow consecutively and respectively
  6. Always zoom in and do minor adjustments and then zoom out to see the whole image to gauge your adjustments
  7. Go into pixel-peep if needed
  8. Complete all necessary adjustments and save your image

Hi Zeckson

Good effort and nice of you to share with everyone..:) Your action is one that is non-selfish and it promotes an environment to learn from each other ..

Good stuff man ! Great information !

Hi Zeckson, thanks for creating this portrait retouching tutorial for us and I believe it is of great beneficial to everyone here. I am not good at photoshop and I am trying to learn here. Everything go smooth until at the stage of Clone Stamp tool. I follow closely to the tips you have given but I don't know what to do with the pattern, it don't have any option for me not to choose it. Can you advice on this? Thanks.

Thx U very much for guiding a newbie like me...
I'll sure try ya steps out, they're really very easy to follow!!
Thx U for ya time and effort putting up the mini guide here..

Szhoe, thanks for your friend add request. I have added you to my friends list. I hope there will be more people willing to share their stuffs to this community and not just come inside here, post their pictures, got all the good comments and wipe their backside and go off.

This is a sharing community and there are many people wanting to learn and improve themselves. Although there is a limit to the amount of knowledge shared, I don't even see an attempt to even guide on the basics. Maybe they are in other sub-forums and I am just lazy to find. ;)

After you have selected the Clone Stamp tool, select a soft edge brush from the top bar. You should see a drop down list dialog box where you can select brush size and brush edge. Once done that, look over to the right and you shall see the word "Mode" and another drop down list. Click on it and select "Lighten". There.

Reference onto a white area and then paint over the dark areas you want to lighten. Make sure opacity is low so that you need multiple brush strokes to get to the final result. The reason is because by having small adjustments, you can guage how much edit you wanna do and when to stop. Use your eyes to guage. What looks good to you, works for you.

Feel free to ask me questions again if you cannot get it. :)

Thanks for sharing Guru Zeck.

Can the Mod make this sticky?

Can I do it using photoshop 7.0? I suspect it is due to the version that I can't make it using the Clone Stamp tool.

Hi Jason, I am not sure about Photoshop 7.0. I can't answer your question. I am using CS2. Basically the Clone Stamp tool in CS2 has some blending options on the top bar that you can choose. To lighten the under eyes, simply choose "Lighten" from the list of available options. Not sure if you can see these options in v7.0...

Nice!! Thanks for this tutorial!!

OK, thank you so much. I think I got to us the healing brush to lighten the under eyes. Really looking forward to see more of your works and sharing tips.

Thank you very much for the write up Zeckson. Perfect for ID-10-Ts like myself when it comes to potrait editing..
But a question, do you really have to edit her eyes that much? Or is it due to her insistance?

P.S: No doubt the editing brought out the "blemish" free looks in her. But i prefer her natural looks more...hahah

your tutorial is good. Can i up you?
