you see, it is no more confined into a "local event". we cannot just argue about singapore protecting their citizens. right now, it is going gobal. if you want to know the seriousness of this, just check the internet. like what i say, there isn't going to be any perfect ending anymore. what choices to take and what to sacrifice will be done by the government. just hope they will make a smart choice. bottom line, singapore signed a contract and breached it. if they understood that security would be an issue, and that protecting their citizens is placed in top pirority, they shouldn't even signed it in the first place. but what's done is done. pray that the consequences wun be high and costly.:(

Sg govt have always got "good" citizen to rely on, listening to their views.... Now let them "globalise" and face the world loh.

and do you find it strange. none of this is reported in our news. is like if you're not on the internet often, one will still think that the imf is going smoothly and singapore is doing a good job. selective reporting, going to be on BBC soon.

oh man, want to add on something:
NGOs reject Singapore offer to join IMF-WBank dialogue
More than 160 NGOs boycott IMF-World Bank meetings
oh man, this is bad, this is bad,....... right now, i really dun think IMF is(like what some of you said) putting a show. THEIR SURVIVAL IS THREATENED! shucks.

between the devil and the deep blue sea. where will singapore choose?

"The NGOs said the two Washington-based lenders knew of the city-state's strict laws against public gatherings when they planned the meetings.

"These institutions are most comfortable in countries without respect for civil liberties and human rights," said Sameer Dossani of the 50 Years is Enough.

Both institutions "could not have been in the dark about Singapore's track record when they chose it," Dossani said.

"Our boycott is a response to egregious hypocrisy, said Ana Maria Nemenzo, president of the Philippine-based Freedom From Debt Coalition."

Satay man .... somehow you gave me the impression that you are very unhappy with our country. Though at times we dont like what our Govt is doing, but whatever is it, our interests should always be with Singapore, our motherland.

IF only those 66% of singaporeans are wiser and choose the right ppl to lead our country, lame things such as wats happening now will have lower chance of happening

felt so disgraceful as a singaporean now..becos of those lame restrictions

An investment that turns sour for Singaporeans. Hundreds of million spent to attract negative publicity and stinging attacks from around the world.

I am very sad, I feel like I am living in Pong Yang and listening only to Class 95 (hears the good things only).

I am a naive geek (having completed higher learning), just couldn't find any academic reasoning to relate Protest to Terrorism as stated below. Will people with the highest learning please enligthen me? :(

"Singapore police said tough security measures were necessary because the country, Southeast Asia's most advanced economy, is a high-profile "terrorist" target and any public protests would compromise preparations."

When a person criticise his/her country, it may not means that he/she has no love for the country. Could be out of love that one starts nagging (like mother nagging her son). Also could be during the loving process, he/she is betrayed and hurt badly by the People ruling the land. There is a saying: unhappy customer who don't complains has decided to drop you. Naggers are stayer; Non-Naggers are quitter

I always nag whenever I was packed like sardines in the MRT, knowing SMRT is making good profit while they should not be.

I always nag when paying my Taxis Rental. They told high COE = high rental, but tumbling COE is till equal to high rental. I was taken for a free ride. :bheart:

IMF? WB?

You people have to go to Kino and get the book Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins. Quite a startling read.

No one said that 66% of the voters are right or wrong... I'm saying govt have encouraged globalisation for economic benefits. They than making Sg a Pro-business place, they should also "globalised" their management style.... and not simply Banning the unwanted, IMHO, that's taking the easy route.

remember chewing gums? Some bans are good... but you can't simply ban portions of such an event.

what it say?

It seems to be getting out of hand and I sincerely wish this event will end positively so this will be my last comment. I will keep my opinions and hopes to myself and really really want this to work out.

just look across the causeway (as in really look across and see the slums) and see how if the "right" people have led the country would lead us to. We may not always like the *** for what they are but we cannot deny that we are an economic giant, a powerful nation in our region within a short 50 years. And put it this way, have anyone been summarily executed, taken away by death squads for having alternative views? Or been charged as a "gay" and imprisoned as in some other countries?

To be ashamed because of restrictions? Why ashamed? Frankly protest? What is there to protest about? You have food to eat, a job what more do you want? Be a rebel for the sake of being a rebel?

Anyway the illegal protests have started, just passed by Hong Lim at 4am and saw riot police surrounding protesters.

whaa.. u go where cheong until 4am... those pple should been ard there since 11 in the morn...

your 2 paragraphs above doesnt sound right, at least to me... when someone give me food and job, that means i'll hav to work hard to get food.. when i've food it doesnt mean i have no complains and should keep my mouth shut.. or being force to do so....

across the causeway? where r u refering to? .. we may have achieve better economy and social stablity for now but there're still plenty time ahead for others to prove.. i use to play this game known as the 'sim city', a bigger map is way harder to handle or manage then bit smaller ones... i know these arent gaming issue but in a democratic society, have we forgotten about our rights, maybe yes or not.. in this case, due the current issue, if we've no idea about rights, i think the whole world is trying to remind us now...

DT the point is what are we protesting against? Are we protesting just because IMF is here and Foreigners come and we happily join in and protest and say "Freedom!! Free Speech!!"

If we really want to protest then it should be against something that affects us. I will not hesitate to speak up if the govt is wrong but in this instance I feel that it is so silly that we are doing "Billy (or in this case foreign groups) says" Meaning what they do, we follow. As I said before, IMF have had history of severe violence and SIngapore IS a prime target for Islamic Extremists. I can understand the govt point of view, a street protest will be a security nightmare, no one can guarantee among that hundred over people (that is if a public protest was allowed) you won't have a small group of trouble makers who start a riot. In that instance, the police will be forced to step in with force and then they will be accused of being brutal in using force to curb the protests. Either way, our govt gets blamed for everything.

Yes if you get food and drink, you still have the right to fight for your rights, but as I said are these foreign protesters really concerned about you? They are just here for their own agendas.

And as for our neighbours, yes they need time to catch up but one cannot deny their mismanagement have led them to what they are today. One tip, just go to any tall building and take a look around at teh skyline and the modern development, the order, the sight of our nation and you compare that with that of our neighbours. I would say this I am proud to be Singaporean.
