[ BBBBug ] Olympus 45mm /f1.8

Beautiful lens, works beautifully on my GX1. The camera/lens setup is so light compare to FF DSLR, plus no mirror flap, the lack of Image stabilisation is hardly an issue.
I have shot with 200mm old lens without IS. We just need to learn how to make use of situation. I like your attitude, Chopper.

I'm using w a gf1, initially bit hard to get used to especially indoor shoot! But workaround by exploring my shutter priority mode for once instead of sticking to Aperture priority, so far decent results, compiled a portfolio of portrait shots this cny and 80% quite happy with their own photos which is the key criteria for me :)

guys

one thing that bugs me is the attitude of members
why so defensive?

i did try out the 45mm
and there's no blur or any issue
and the bokeh is creamy and the image was sharp

but my question and points still stands..
for a 45mm i would prefer to have IS on it..
whether using it on a Oly body or build it on the lens ..
because everybody's hand is different, technique is different and yadayada

if u argue the fact that including an IS will make the lens bigger or a probably will kill the IQ or jack up the price.
then fine.. but do not be defensive if ppl prefer the lens to have IS to assist on slower shutter speed.
these company created IS for a reason...

btw it is damn weird having silver lens on a black body
*personal preferences *

I like and appreciate your comments. Please read my posting on the perspective thread.... the thing is that we ought to learn to use what we have and live within our budget. I love all the features of the best camera but if it cost $15K, I would learn to make do try to take pictures with my $1.5K equipment. That should be the way. So the issue of IS is that if you like the Oly 45mm without IS and mount it on your Pany then try to use both wo the IS feature. Alternative? Yes there are..... cost $$$. I love that 200mm f2.8 AF lens but the old 200 f4 manual is what I can afford for now. Choice...live with it or pay for the alternative. It is a Simple decision that the user has to make.

anybody actually use a Oly lens on a Panny camera?
a FL of 45mm (90mm) ... wont it be bad not to have IS on the lens? :(

Using it on a G3.
No problems with lack of IBIS.
The usual guidelines apply for me at all times with or w/o IBIS.
1. At least 1/60 for human subjects at the lowest possible ISO anything lower and potential subject movement will never guarantee a sharp shot, IBIS or not.
2. Be in the most stable position possible. (brace; stabilize on something; stance; etc)

In practical use, the 45/1.8 is fast and coupled with base ISO160, very seldom does the shutter speed go very low.

but an IS 45mm doesnt cost as much as your comparison wor....

if u saying the image quality of
a Panny 45mm with IS is worst than a Oly 45mm without IS..
then ok lar
because the cost comparison is not an arm and a leg mah...

so i dun think cost is the factor here

more like a fan base
and the IQ that come into factor.

Oly made all their bodies (43 and m43) to have IBIS, so logically they would not develop lens with IS, this also enable them to make lens smaller and cheaper. I don't think they will be making lenses with IS on it, sure there's a big pany user base, but I would think they prefer selling their bodies with it.

So the choices you have is learn to use without IS on Pany body with right techniques, or use this lens with Oly body or buy the Pany 45/2.8 with IS (but u lose DOF and 1.33 stops of speed).

Bro. The other thing is that AFAIK, even Canon or Nikon primes don't have IS/VR. So why should m4/3 be different.?

i do understand how VR/IS work
i am not asking for freeze frame image
but i do think that with IS/VR it will help me get a more stable picture
especially with longer FL

actually selected canon primes do have IS. But since made m4/3 with IBIS, of course they will not make IS lenses. Making their prime/Kit lenses at the smallest most convenient size, at the same time at the lowest cost will allow them to reap the rewards of a small system.

just to name a few
- Canon 100mm F2.8L HIS Macro
- Canon 200 F2L IS
- Canon 300mm F2.8L IS
+ many more L superteles

Yep.. Not the portrait length teles like the 85mm from Canon/Nikon, which dont have IS and is very similar to the oly 45mm in FL as they are used as short teles or portraits. Longer teles of course need OIS.. unless you use a tripod : )

To be fair to nicekit, if all lens could have IS, that will definitely help. I would love to have my Canon 85/1.2 with 4 stop IS, eventhough I hardly need it, why not ? But also bear in mind, all Oly lens for m43 will NOT have IS, since they choose to have sensor base image stabilisation, not lens base. And having said that, technique is still important, even with or without IS. with right technique, you can handhold a non-IS lens at 85mm focal length to as low as 1/40 shutter speed without much visibile image blur. Igamine with IS, you can technically handhold the same focal length to 1/2 shutter speed assuming there is good 4 stop IS.... And you will be able to get much sharper image at 1/200 with the right technique vs not. This is part of the photographic skill.
